Hair Loss, Please Help!! Hi Guys, I have a question. Do your yorkies lose hair on the top of the skull? I left my dog with my mom for 4 days and suddenly I noticed that Max has a huge round bold spot right on top of his head!!! I mean there is no hair on that quarter size spot! Just there though. The skin color is kind of spotty and patchy. We are not sure if this is some kind of skin condition or b/c his hair was tied and he pull it out somehow or got caught somewhere. But his hair is tied in an "ouch-less cloth band", if it is ever tied. So I cut his hair on his head prett short to prevent more hair loss. What could be wrong with him??!! Or do they just naturally have a very weak and sensitive skin on their head? Should I take him to the docor? Please, someone help.... Also do you guys know what type of illnesses Yorkies are prone to? Please let me know. Thank you. |
No, they do not have very weak or sensitive skin on their heads. It needs to be checked by a vet. It could be many things, perhaps even a hotspot if it was tied up on top. If I can find the page on illnesses, I will post that here, too. :) |
The hair loss could be caused my numerous things. Id start out by visiting your vet. |
definitely go to the Vet ... plz keep us posted. :( |

My Jewels lost alot of hair on her back and the vet did a skin scrape to check for mites. It came back negative but they put her on an antibiotic and her hair grew in. |
I'm wondering if it's ringworm - I've never seen it but it sounds like what I've read about - the test IS simple .... Chanel had a spot on her leg as a baby....the hair one day was just gone - it was about the size of a dime - I freaked and took her to the vet - it was nothing that he could diagnosis so he told me to just watch her - it did grow back - I think she got bit by something and pulled her hair out - your puppy couldn't do it since it's on his head - so maybe it could be ringworm ? Good luck - I hope your vet can help and that your baby is ok ! |
My first thought was ringworm. I hope that isn't it. It is hard and time consuming to treat. Medicated shampoos, pills and then you have to wipe everything down with bleach including your walls. Second thought is you had some skin tied up in the topknot. This will cause hair loss and it might not grow back. A groomer told me that when you put a topknot in, pull the band out to make sure you didn't get any skin. Either way, take your furbaby to the vet. Better safe than sorry. |
How can you tell if it's ringworm? What are the symptoms? Wouldn't you see the worm in his droppings? How do you get them?? Max's hair loss does not look like some kind of hot spot or skin problem due to mites. If so, it will be either red or patchy. It's just kind of gone and bold. There is no scar or redness. The skin kind of looks patchy b/c it's got a little white spots. It is a size of a nickle I think. I am hoping that he pulled it out himself and it will grow back. He seems to play well and eat well. I am going to give it another couple of days b/f I take him to the doctor. |

How old is Maximus?? |
He just turned 1 year old on 8/5/05. Last friday, suddenly I noticed a nickle size hair gone on top of his head. No sign of anything else. How can this be... I will check him again this Friday. If this does not cure itself, I have to take him to a vet. I don't have pet insurance. Does anyone know if this kind of stuff is covered by the insurance? What kind should I get? should I get one from Petco.com? |
Wish I could help on that - I'm sure your vet offers insurance but I don't know anything about Petco's ....good luck ! |
