won't eat. over 1 month now.... my yorkie won't eat anything. this is how it goes. i feed him ramdom things from when i got him to now. dry food. ( from when i got him. ) rice noddle chicken beef plastic & garbage around the house ( now ) he drinks alot of water. thats how it goes. i try putting meat in a bowl and he smell it and leaves. i try feeding him 1 piece at a time he will kinda eat some. if i put 2 piece on my hand. he won't eat it. if i take off the other piece he will nibble on it... weird. and the piece have to be very very small. PS: i give him little consequin pill to build his strength. |
Has he been checked for liver shunt? If he isn't eating anything, he will need a feeding tube or something at the vets. |
It could be he's not eating very well because he isn't getting enough exercise. Take him for long walks twice a day, or if you have a tread mill, put him in that each day for a mile walk. Next, try inexpensive round steak. Put olive oil in the skillet with a couple of whole garlic cloves cut in half lengthwise and get the skillet really hot, add the round steak, put a lid on the skillet and fry in hot skillet for 4 minutes on each side. The steak should be med. rare. Then try feeding him tiny peices at a time. He really needs to start eating better. |
FORGOT TO SAY, he's 10 months old :) when i got him. he used to eat from a big bowl. now i have to feed him piece by piece. if i put all the meat that he likes alot in a bowl he won't eat it. but feeding piece by piece he will, alot of it. also: if some time when i give him a bigger piece meat. he will hide them next to his bed... or under a chair. whats up with that.. do you think not exercise enough cause this? |

I agree. He needs a bile acids test to make sure liver disease isn't the cause of his poor appetite. |
Mine won't eat out of a bowl...she has to eat off a plate or the floor. |
Yorkies are known to be v e r y picky eaters. Prince was like that...he would love something one day and hate it the next. He would eat very little, but I would be very patient with him and kept encouraging him. If you ever give him table food, it will be very hard to get him back on track...trust me, I know. Maybe I read it wrong, but did you say he eats plastic and garbage?? |
I agree, yorkies are picky eaters. As someone stated before, one day they love something and the next they hate it! This is exactly what Jack does. When I first got Jack almost 2 years ago our breeder told us to mix just a little bit of Avocado with his dry food every now and then. So whenever Jack decides that he hates his food I’ll mix just a little bit of Avocado and he loves it! I would also suggest taking your baby to see a vet just to be safe. I hope that everything works out for you guys. |

Please take him to the vet and see what is going on. Hope everything will be ok and please update, thanks.:) |
Make sure you have him tested for Liver Shunts. Ask your vet for an acid bile test. You will have to fast him for 12 hours prior to this test. And that includes no water. No appetite is one of the signs for Shunts. Please keep us updated....Lissette |
My puppy is 4 months old and the most picky eater, I just went yesterday and got her Eagle Brand Holistic select.. She loves it, and I tried EVERYTHING , wellness, canidea, solid gold ( she like it ) d, this is perfect. I think maybe she is teething and the big kibble hurts her mouth, but the holisitic food has great ingredients maybe its worth giving it a try!! Good Luck :) |

Didn't you say he drinks water excessively? |
I agree with everyone saying to have his bile acids tested....picky eating is one of the common signs of liver issues.... My Quinn has MVD and one of his signs was being a picky eater..... what happens is that they eat a food and it then makes them feel nauseous and not well, and they don't want to eat that food again..... Let us know how you make out at the vets... my first step would be to rule out any medical issues.... My mother's dog on the other hand also will not eat out of a bowl....he eats on a plate |
Eating ;)I had the same problem getting my yorkie, Max, to eat. He seemed to like baby food, specifically chicken noodle baby food. After I got him to eat, spoon by spoon, I then mixed rice into the baby food and he really chowed down. After 2 months, he decided to try the dog food. Thankfully he is continually eating the dog food and I haven't had any other problems. |
My Yorkie, Tucker is 5 months old now. he was sick fior a few days, and wouldn't eat his food from a bowl. So, I fed him his food from my hand. Guess what? That's the only way he'll eat it now. I kind of enjoy it because he's my baby, and I have lots of free time. I know it's not a good thing to have him so spoiled, and I feel a little guilty about it. Tucker's Mom |

sorry i didn't make it clear. he will eat but only when i feed him. if i put food in a bowl he won't eat at all. but strange he go around the house and vacuum for us ( eats all the papers and garbage ) no kiddin. he like something and few weeks later he hates it. how can i go him back. right now he only wants beef. PS: one more thing. he only sleeps on people beds. meaning mine, my parents. he will cry if we don't put him on our bed. which is fine. but alot of time he goes inside the sheets. and it's a bit dirty. we bath him once every 3 days. becasue he only sleeps on our beds... WE BECOME HIS SLAVES. |

I completely understand what you say. if I would have left Sasha I would habe been her slave too. But you need to give be stronger. They are like kids and men lol they will go as far as you let them. Sasha wanted to be picky about food and wanted to sleep in my bed too. but I bought her a nice comfy bed and didn't listen to her when she was whining, so she loves her bed now! About the food, what I do is that I leave her food out all day because I work all day. but after 7pm I take her food away, after that I might only give her small treats. like fruits or a small bone treat. but you have to be disciplined about this so he will pick up the routine. At the beginning he might not want to eat but when he is starving he will eat! |
Ah...so what you are saying is....he's spoiled totally rotten! Here's how you cure that....take a BIG breath & keep doing what you are doing!!!!:p |
Not eating I am so sorry that your little one is not eating. It sounds like there may be a health issue here. My dog stopped eating and was drinking a lot and was found to have pancreatitis and kidney disease, so it would be wise to take the pup to the vet asap. Hope all goes well. |
Tucker eats from my hand, sleeps in bed with us, wants lots of attention (which he gets). He happy and spoiled. I'm happy that I can spoil him. It's different with children, of course. Spoiling isn't good past a few months. To a certain extent, if you have the time, spoiling is fine with dogs. Tucker's servant |
I forgot to mention a concern. Does he get dirty enough to be bathed every 3 days? Tucker's Mom |
