anaplasmosis? My daughters dog went in for annual checkup and her blood test showed up with a positive for this "condition", anaplasmosis. The vet seemed very concerned and we are waiting on the long blood test result. It is a tick born illness effecting the red blood cell counts, which are low. One test has come back already and the counts are fine. The next results will be in on Tuesday. Maddy is on a two week antibiotic and we are in a holding pattern. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks for your help. |
I have never heard of it before, but here is some information for you: Welcome to Plainfield Veterinary Hospital & Clinic: Pet Care |
Did a thesis paper on Erlichia last year. Its another tick-borne illness. Since it is bacterial, they will treat it with antibiotics, and have had a great deal of success in treating humans. Anaplasmosis , broken down into medical terminology means: An- without, or negative, plasma- is of course the fluid part of the blood that holds particulates, and osis - is the condition or status there of. The platelets are also called Thrombocytes, and are the smallest formed elements of the blood. Not classified as cells but are fragments of specialized large bone marrow cells known as Megakaryocytes. In its simpliest, their role is in the clotting of the blood. That is why bleeding is a major factor in this disease. If the Thrmobocytes have been attacked bacterialogically, and their numbers reduced, then clotting becomes decreased, hense the bleeding. Having her blood tested to find out if infection has happened is the most important thing, and you have done that. If she is positive they probably will continue the antibiotic regime with earnest. And like I said, the humans who have contracted this disease, are also being treated with the same medical plan. Best of luck. Hope this helps some! |
Thanks for the help. This answered some questions for me. She is completely asymptomatic and we're hoping for the best. I'll fill you in on Tuesday! |
Just a quick update on the Grand dog. The test results came back negative, and all is good. We have no idea what caused the false positive but she is happy and healthy. Thank you again for your help! |
That is great news! Thanks for the update.:thumbup: |
