I found a deaf and blind Yorkie yesterday.... Hi! I am glad I found your forum, as I need your help: Yesterday, a Yorkie wandered into my front yard, stumbled around and walked in circles. He was accompanied by a big black dog that I think might have been his guardian pal. When I went outside to see, the big dog ran away, but the yorkie didn’t react to my presence. I approached him carefully, and realized that not only was he blind, but he was deaf as well. He was all skin and bones; his hair was matted and, well, rather smelly! He must have been on the streets for a month. (how his people could lose track of him, I have no idea) We gave him food and water, which he scarfed. We scooped him up and gave him a bath and a little trim. This sweet boy was appreciative; he rested his head on my chest for a while and went to sleep. He appears to be an elderly pooch. We can see that he has a cataract in his right eye, and his left eye is red with a little globular bump, and kind of runny. He responds to no sounds. I know what ear canals look like, as we keep my toy poodle’s ears clean; so either this yorkie has the tiniest of ear canals, or this little fella wasn’t born with any (is that possible?). Anyway, we’ve put up flyers, put an on-line ad in the paper, and called Animal Control to see if anyone reported a lost dog. No luck yet. I really don’t know what to do next. He pooped, and his stool is loose, and there may be some whitish looking worms. Can I give him a de-wormer? How about a capstar? I would love to take him to the vet, but considering my circumstances, I am unable. I would like to know if there is something I can do for him at home. He is an amazing boy; He already knows where his food and water bowls are in relation to his new cushion. My better half is not pleased that I already named the pup Chewbacca (Chewie, for short), as he thinks we already have our hands, and house, full of rescued people and pets, and there is no money to care for a special needs dog. Can I please get some words of wisdom? Thank you, so much! |
Poor baby. I am so glad he found you. I would call a Yorkie rescue in your area and explain the circumstances. I am sure they will come and get him and give him the care he so deserves plus find him a new forever home. I am sure other's will even be able to come up with a rescue in your area since we have several rescue people groups here on YT. Bless your heart for helping this lost little one. I am so glad you found us. |

I've never heard of Capstar hurting anything-- if you have the proper dose on hand for a small dog, I can't imagine that it'd hurt him to give him one, and it might make him a lot more comfortable and prevent him from passing fleas to any of your other pets. I wouldn't give him any other meds until a doctor has had a chance to look at him whenever that is possible. As a senior pet, there might be a lot of issues going on that could be complicated by reactions to meds. |
Ahhh....You are so kind for taking him in. I think he really, really needs to see a Vet. If you can't afford that right now, I would suggest contact a Reputable Florida Rescue ~ Check this link out: Home Being in his condition and out on the streets, he probably has a lot of things that need medical attention and really should be addressed sooner than later. PLEASE - just whatever you do, please do not hand him to animal control or a shelter...sadly, in his condition, I think they would just PTS. :( |
I second the othe posting..... do not take him to a shelter, he will be deemed un-adoptable and put to sleep. If there is anyway you can manage to keep him please do so..... I believe that the black dog led this baby into your yard because you love animals and take care of God's little creatures. John |
Thank you all - Many thanks to you all for your comments. To put your minds at ease, I would never take Chewie to Animal Control or a shelter - I know how things are handled over there. I am going to look for a rescue group, thanks for the suggestion. John, I like to think that the black dog led this little fella to my home - but we'll never know for sure! I really think that he was trying to take care of Chewie; it was cute to see the difference in size of these two friends. I will keep you informed about what happens when I contact a rescue group. I am so thankful to have everyone's input and advice. Thank you all again. |

Poor little guy...He's lucky to have wondered into your area though! You guys are so thoughtful for helping him! As far as giving him a dewormer, it probably won't hurt. Most vets will answer questions over the phone at no charge...especially if you explain to them what happened. Another YTer posted the number for a 24 hour vet phone line...I'll see if I can find it for you. |
My heart goes out for this little sweetie. You are an angel for taking him in. Please keep us posted as to what happens. Hopefully someone on here who is in Rescue will see this and can help. |
