Kennel Cough? I posted this in two sections because I wasn't sure which one was correct. Hi everyone, I am not sure if I am posting this in the correct spot but I hope someone can help me. I have a 14 year old French Poodle and she has this chronic cough which got worse last night. It used to be a cough here and there but last night it sounded a little more severe and at one point she was hacking for almost 2 hours straight...needless to say, I got no sleep. I took her to the vet in early January and they prescribed some medicine (I have them at home, I can't remember the names of them). They also took films and her chest is crystal clear. The pills "worked" in the sense that while she was on them the cough seemed to get a little better but it never fully went away. I went to pet meds this morning and I found this cough syrup, Nectadyn, and I am debating whether to get it or not. Has anyone ever used this or can someone suggest something I can do to calm it down a bit? |
I personally woudln't go with the cough medicine unless it is something your vet prescribed. Does the dog have kennel cough? If it does then the meds your vet gave you are only to keep it from turning into pneumonia which can be very serious. Kennel cough is like the human cold- nothing will make it go away- it just has to run its course. When layla had kennel cough i put a warm air humidifier near her crate at night and this really helped. If you dont' have one- turn the shower on very very hot and close the bathroom door and hold your pup around the steam (obviously not too close :p ) if you do this for a few days it should help with the coughing. |
The problem is this cough has been around for a good year! Initially they said kennel cough and I figured it would get better but it never really did; it just kind of calmed down. So then they thought it might be something else so they took films twice (once in 11/07 and then 1/09) and they came up clear so its not a tumor. Unfortuately I dont have a lot of money so I can't take her in until 3 weeks from now so I was looking for something to manage it a bit until I could bring her in. I still have the pills they gave her in Jan so I started those back up and then like I said I found the syrup. Some meds need a prescription but this one doesn't. |
I would ask your vet what he/she thinks about it- you dont' want it to interact with the meds she is on now. |
Our Max has a cough now and then and it always helps him when I give him some honey, either in warm milk what he loves but gives him the runs or from a spoon. If the air is very dry in your home a humidifier helps or wet towels on the radiators or some water in pots and in the bathtub... Take your baby into the bathroom with you when you take a shower. Put a shirt on her and put a tiny amount of wick vaporub on the shirt (not the fur, that burns!) where she can't lick it. Hope that helps... |
I put a call into the vet to make sure if was ok with the meds she is on now. I should hear from them sometime this afternoon. I was thinking about the honey thing, I have to get some on the way home. And I will be sure to put her in the bathroom when any one of us takes a shower! :) Thanks for the help. I will let you know what the vet says and if you have any more suggestions/opinions please let me know. |
