xylitol poisoning
 
My one year old yorkie girl got into my purse and ate gum with xylitol.We called the poison hotline(which charges $60 dollars),followed the guidelines to make her vomit and she is at the vet ICU on IV dextrose.They told me they won't know if she will have liver failure for 72 hours. I am sick with worry. I want to see her but I don't want her to get excited and pull out the IV or her catheter. I had no idea this stuff was so toxic and I'm so mad at myself for leaving my purse where she could get at it. It's ggoing to be a long hard 3 days.Please pray...:aimeeyork

I'm praying for your little girl, I hope she makes it. We have this thread, and I was sure it was on the list, but I don't see it, it might be a good idea to put it on the list. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...l-hotline.html I think some people think that if a dog doesn't get sick right away, it's ok, and it's important to note that some substances damage the liver and don't show up immediately. Hopefully, you got her to a vet soon enough, you must be in agony. I'm so sorry about this.

I had it added to one of the "stickies" but not all of them. It would be a good idea to add it to all of them, as it can be extremely toxic.

And to OP... it sounds like you may have caught it in time. This happened to one of our family members and luckily their dog pulled through with no health problems. I pray your baby will be OK.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about your baby. Please try not to worry too much. I went thru the same thing over a year ago. I had no idea about the xylitol either. Thank goodness my Ceasar made a full recovery, so it's not always fatal. Will be keeping you and your baby in my thoughts and prayers.

I didn't know we had more than one Poison stickie. Yes, it really needs to be added to all of them, sugarless gum is such a common thing, and so many people have it in their purse and lay their purse down.

Thank you all for your kind words and prayers. If anything good comes of this it will be to spread the information so another puppy dosen't have to suffer. She is still in ICU on dextrose IVs. They are starting liver level testing and should know by tomorrow night if she will survive and if so, with how much liver damage. I can't sleep well or concentrate at work and It's killing me not to see her but I don't want her to pull out any tubing. I came home from work and instinctively shut the door quickly because she always lunges at me but she's not there:cry:

I'm so glad you gave us an update, this is just heartbreaking, it could happen so easily. Puppies seem like that want to put everything in their mouths, and I knew it was bad, but didn't know it was that bad. My prayers are with you, and please don't be too hard on yourself, this could happen to anyone. I just don't think this is something that the average pet owner is aware.
