Parvo On Friday, 2-27-09, we took our 4 month old Yorkie to the vet and they diagnosed her with colonitis. Saturday she was lifeless, throwing up, etc. so we took her to the only vet open on Saturday. They diagnosed her with PARVO. They told me she has a 50/50 chance of surviving. They now have her in the hospital and say she will be there for 7 days on IV fluids and that we can't visit her because she will be in PARVO Isolation. How often do these dogs survive this? I can't even think of losing her. |
I have heard on here of a few pups surviving it |
I'm so sorry to hear about your dog, I've read about a few who hadn't had all their shots that were exposed to it, and some recovered. Did your dog have all her shots? I hope she will make a speedy recovery, and it sounds like she's in the best of hands. You might want to do a search, if she recovers, and is exposed to the Parvo again, from what I've read, she can get reinfected, so you need to thoroughly clean your home, and her bedding. As I recall, only a few disinfectants kill the Parvo virus. One of them is bleach; and of course this can't be used on all surfaces. Do you know how she came in contact with this? Remember, it's important to not take your dogs around other dogs, until she has all her shots. Going to a dog park, where she can come in contact with a tiny bit of poop is all it takes. Good luck. |
Parvo I had a litter of pups and we kept one, she was 14 months old,had all her shots and one morning she was acting very strange, she was bleeding from her bum just a little, so I rushed her to the vet and the vet said they were going to do some tests and to call in a few hrs, when I called back i was told she had parvo, I was shocked because she had all her shots a nd I had 5 other dogs here, I said to the vet which they new because thay had all her records right in the computer, how did she get this having all her shots,he said some puppies like to dig in the dirt, which she did and even with the shot when they are young they can get it.It ws 50/50 chance she would survive, they had her there for a week, before she could come home, every crate had to be washed down with straight bleach, all bedding washed and had to keep her away from the other dogs, what a mess I was in knowing I had 5 more dogs here. Well, anyway she pulled thru and everything turned out well, I kept her away from the other dogs for a week, basically kept her in a crate and took her out the front door away from the other dogs. She got fine and no other dog got it.so she did survive, and she was very sick,so hang on to hope, they can make it. |
Thank you so much for replying. She has had all her shots and I have cleaned everything, including carpets, furniture, bedding, etc. with bleach/water mixture. That's what the vet told us to do. I have a miniature schnauzer at home who has been around my yorkie. We take her today for a parvo booster shot but the vet said since she's 4 years old, she should be ok. The vet just called me and said DaisyMae is up playing and is no longer throwing up. She said they will try to feed her today and hopefully she will keep it down. Keep your fingers crossed. |
Oh your poor baby. My prudence had the same symptoms, back in November. Same story, we took her in to the only open vet on saturday. She didn't survive it. But your furbaby seems to be doing better! I will pray. |

That's great news, sounds like you found a good vet. By the way, welcome to Yorkietalk! Got my fingers crossed! :xfingers: |
I am so sorry to hear your baby has parvo. That word alone sends shivers down my spine! My son's dog was diagnosed with parvo on Friday and is in the hospital very ill. His dog also had all his shots and still got it. I'm thinking I should get parvo boosters for Maddie and Libby. My son lives in a different city, but they come here to visit and I've heard parvo germs can be spread by shoes. I feel so bad for you and will say a prayer for your precious baby. Hugs to you! Keep us updated! I am hoping for good news! |
Parvo I have a lot of faith your little one is going to pull thru. When my little Crystal RIP little girl, she died from heart at age 11.was diagnosed with parvo it was like 4 days and we went to see her, they let us, but she was in isolation kennel with all glass, but she wouldn't even look at us and didn't even get excited to see us, she was really sick and she made it. I have hope for your little one especially if she is playing, good sign. will keep you in my prayers. |
We have a Chihuahua that survived parvo. She didn't throw up but a few times but she was very lethargic. I was really shocked to get the diagnosis from the vet because she showed no signs that I had read about such as bloody diarrhea and all. The vet let us take the fluids home and administer them under her skin. He thought she would recover better being home with us. She was also on an antibiotic, Pepto Bismol, Pedialyte, and some stuff we sprinkled on her food to help her digest it better. This had to be the longest weekend of my life just watching her laying there so sick and poking that huge needle with fluids in her every 6 hrs was the worse, she wasn't even 2 lbs at that point. After 2-3 days she came around and was pretty much back to normal. We did have to keep her away from my others for a month. I used so much bleach. I bleached everything that she had been in contact with and I bleached her area she stayed in 2 times a day along with her food/water bowls & bleached her bedding daily too. It was alot of work but it's so worth it to have her here with us now. I hope your baby makes it through this! If she's up and getting around then I would say that's a good sign already. |
We did have a lab puppy with parvo-after IV meds/fluids she pulled through.Good luck.. |
Daisy Update I talked to the vet this morning and Daisy is doing much better. She held down her food all day yesterday and no longer is throwing up or has diarreha. I thank God she's doing so much better. They told me we could pick her up this evening but I asked them to keep her an extra do to make sure she's ok. Thank you all so much for your prayers and for sharing this with me.:animal-pa |

about the parvo It seems like everything is on the mend, I am so happy for you and your little one, another one survives parvo. HURRAY |
I am so sorry that your baby is going through this, but I'm thrilled that she's doing so well. :) |
So happy she is doing better and can come home. |
Parvo :)That is such wonderful news. It seems like your little one will make it. I'm a newbie to Yorkie Talk. I really enjoy it, but I'm getting paronoid. Tucker is my first Yorkie, and is the smallest dog I've ever had. I read about all of these horible things happening to Yorkies, and I'm so frightened. I don't know what I would do if I lost Tucker. I've never lost a young animal. They've all lived to a ripe old age. I look at Tucker, and pray that he will live as long as my others have. How can they get Parvo if they've been vacinated? Am I being a worry wart? We are very careful with him, and he seems healthy. He's 4 months old, and will probably be under 5 lbs when he's grown We love him so much. Are Yorlies more susceptible to all of these illneses, or is it just that they're all posted on this sight? |
Parvo We have a Border Collie that is Reesie's big buddy. Her name is Cindy. We had her spayed in her first year and she contracted Parvo while at the vet's. They put her on IV's for a few days and told us she wouldn't survive. We took her home as a long holiday weekend was coming up and there would be little support staff at the vet over the weekend. I try to think that the love and familiar surroundings is what did the trick. Cindy is now 10 years old, lightning fast all her life, happy, and she has a little buddy to watch out for in Reesie our three year old Yorkie. |
People need to be aware there is a new strain of Parvo called Parvo 2 that is coming into the US via Mexico (they think). The normal shots will not cover this new strain. I am aware of this because of friend of mine took her dog to a Dallas dog park and almost lost her little girl due to this. Her dog is now into a study with Pfizer to help determine a new vaccine. |

I'm not saying that article is legit or anything, I was just wondering. I found it quite informative. It does scare me a little, though because we go to the dog park almost every other day. Hmmm. |
oh! this is terrible :( i am so sorry for your situation. How did your baby get it? did she have all her shots or did she contract parvo before she was done with her series? im sure your baby will be fine since she is getting IV fluids which is very important so she doesnt dehydrate...here is a link that tells more about it...i think your baby have a better chance than 50%...i real they have more like an 80% chance of survival. please keep us updated and of course, we will be thinking good thoughts for you and your baby :) |

DAISYMAE UPDATE - sorry it took me so long :aimeeyorkWe brought Daisy home from the Hospital on Thursday. She is doing much better. The Vet said not to play with her for 3-4 days - they know she'll play because she's a puppy - but for US not to play WITH her. It's very hard not to play with her but we have to remind ourselves we almost lost her. The Vet finally admitted to us that we're very lucky to have her - they said that they really didn't think she would survive it since she is so small. Thank God she did. So far, so good. No problems yet. Thank you ALL so much for your support and prayers. May God Bless each and every one of you.:) |

Written: Sept 26 2008 While at the park this special girl was exposed to the new mutated strain of Parvo, now named Parvo 2 (c), which is suspect as coming in from Mexico and held on death's door for many weeks. The lot number from her vaccine was examined and found it did not provide coverage for this new mutated strain. Because she is only one of a handful of dogs who have contracted this new strain and lived, she now carries antibodies in her system to fight this and is involved in blood testing to help the Pfizer Labratories modify their vaccine so that other animals will not be put at risk. |
