Yorkie struggling to use back legs I have a 14-year old male Yorkie who is struggling to use his back legs. He was doing fine until about a week ago when he started to exhibit less energy and began shaking every so often. I got him into the vet and they did bloodwork and discovered his liver levels were high, but not to the point where he had serious liver problems. He has been taking a medication to control seizures for 10 years and that has taken its toll the vet said. He got him on Hills ID food and prescribed Denosyl to help help with the liver issues. He also said he could take pepcid AC every day to help with the stomach ache. He has been eating fine, but today, he's had a terrible time using his back legs. He'll try to get up, but often just flops down after trying to move. I don't know if this is arthritis or a reaction to the stomach ache making him weak. I would think if it was arthritis, we would have seen the onset over the past few months, rather than hitting this quickly. He has had slight problems with his right hind leg over the past months, but nothing that has really slowed him down. I just don't understand why all of the sudden it's become such a struggle for him to walk. We're taking him back to the vet Monday, but any ideas or answers anyone might have is greatly appreciated. Thanks |
This is probably a long shot, I mean it could be so many things, but just throwing an idea out there....the same thing has been happening to our pug dog and we did xrays. Turns out it's something called spondylosis, which is degenerative arthritis, osteoarthritis, of the spinal vertebra and related tissue. |
I am sooo sorry that your furbaby is not walking properly. Hate it when they get older and all sorts of stuff shows up. I read of Yorkies living to be 16 or 17 yrs. old and that is what I want. Every time one becomes ill I'm afraid that time is being cut short. Hope you find out what is the cause. Hugs. Joanne |
I hope you find the answers. That sounds scary for him and you. |
I think you will get lots of help if you post in the SICK AND INJURED.They have lots of good advise. Im so sorry you are going thru this with your baby. |
Did you take him to the vet today. Just wondering how he is doing. Poor Guy... |

We lost our little Corky on March 2nd. His liver shut down, and that is what was making him so weak. Our family misses him so much. We had almost 10 years with him as a part of our family. |
Please know how sorry I am for your loss of your little man.RIP little one.:animal-pa |
