My new boy is hurt! My daughter was holding Gunner today as we were about to take him with us. He jumped out of her arms and landed on the floor. He was crying and yelping so loud. I was scared to death!!! I felt sooooo helpless. I immediately took him to the vet. They did xrays and said there were no broken bones but he might have torn some cartlige (?) He is on bed rest for 2 weeks and pain reliever once a day. I take him back on Wed. My daughter is so upset. It really scares me and I hope not to go thru this again. Please say a prayer for Gunner. Anyone else have any accidents like this or is this rare?? Karen (gonna be a Grandma tomorrow) |
I will say a prayer for Gunner's (such a cute name, BTW) quick recovery :) I haven't had any injury experience but I can imagine its quite scary. I don't know how common it is, but yorkies being so small and thinking they are big they can definitly get themselves into sticky situations. Lots of hugs from Lucas too :):) |
I am very sorry Gunner was hurt:( These little guys are so small and wiggly .Especially when they are excited. When Suzi was a tiny pup she nearly jumped out of my arms onto the sidewalk, I barely was able to catch her. IT haapens in an instant. These accidents are not rare. A excited little puppy will literaly jump out of your arms and accidents happen. Give your daughter loves of hugs and reassure her that gunner is going to be ok. How is Gunner feeling tonight? Try to keep him calm and warm. Make sure he is eating and drinking well, and keeping warm. |
:hands: for your little Gunner. |

Tell your daughter that it could happen to anyone, and please don't feel too bad. I'm such an overly protective Mommy and even *I* let Missy get hurt. She STILL tries to leap out of my hands when I'm setting her down, only now I'm MUCH more cautious. Two hands are always firmly on my Yorkie, and I don't let go until all 4 feet are on the ground. They are such little wigglers. Sending Gunner lots of *get well quick* vibes. It is so hard for them to not be allowed to run around and play. |
Curly Mac shot herself out of my arms right onto the hard wood floors! I think it was our 2nd week home? She was teeny tiny, maybe 7 weeks old! Anyway, she screamed her head off and then cried real tears for a good 15 minutes after that. As SOON as she lept, I grabbed for her but she hit and I snatched her right up but it was too late. I thought sure it was over but she turned out just fine. I just held her close to me while she cried and I talked to her all sweet like I did my human kids when they got hurt and "poor babied" her until she settled down. It was so sad. Her snifflin' and tears rollin' and carryin' on. sniff. I hope your little one is ok. I bet it will be. |
Our baby got hurt on Christmas Day when she was hopping through all the wrapping paper! :( She popped up like a kangaroo & landed on something & ended up ripping one of her dewclaws off. OMG she was crying so hard. I just cleaned it put some antibiotic ointment on it & put a very tiny little baby sock on her paw which I taped so it wouldn't fall off. She was fine in about a hour & licked her little paw for about a week. But it was very upsetting & it was her 1st Christmas with us.:aimeeyork |
Aww, I'm sorry your baby was hurt. How is he doing this morning? We're sending him get well hugs & kisses. :) |
Poor Gunner and your daughter, too. :( How are they doing today, better I hope. |
aw poor little Gunner. Here's praying for a speedy recovery! I have to really watch my Mo. He is almost 6 years old and will just leap if someone is holding him and he sees something like his fleece blankie or bully stick. He is a little wiggle worm and I have to really be careful with him. Going to be a Grandma??? |
Poor baby. Glad he wasn't hurt worse. It happened to me once but she fell on the lawn and was ok. I try not to carry mine around and when I have to I make sure I have a tight grip on them. Cali in particular will jtry to take a leap out of my arms. I also tell the vets/techs that they tend to jump so they know to have a tight hold on them. |
Yes ... these little guys are squirmy sometimes and they can jump out of your arms They are also very small and they're bodies can't take too much trauma but they do heal quick since he's a pup most likely the cartilage he tore is at a growth plate this is the cartilage that the long bones grow from kids have this too bad thing is if there is a lot of damage or if it doesn't heal correctly there can stunted growth in that bone |
Poor Baby..... |
Good thoughts coming for Gunner. Glad he wasn't hurt badly. They are like squirmy little slippery worms! It's hard to hang onto them when they squirm. Perhaps sitting on the floor and cuddling would be best so you don't have to worry all the time. I am sure Gunner will love that and your daughter too. Fell better soon Gunner, |
Aw poor little Gunner. I pray that he is up and around soon. They really are little wiggly worms. Sending Gunner our best wishes. A little teddy for you :teddy: :getwell: Little guy!! |
I'm so glad your Gunner is ok! My Coco got excited and jumped out of my mother-in -laws arms when I came home from the store. She fractured her leg and had to have surgery to repair, but did not tolerate the anesthesia. We lost her this past June.... I'd like to think she's a "little yorkie angel" watching over other injured yorkies so they don't have to leave this world too soon.:angel2dl: |
hope your baby is okay. They do like to jump. I worry so much about sophie hurting herself i have stairs for her to get on the couch. My daughter ws watching her for me for a weekend and her cat taught her to jump. She will try to jump on anything you are sitting on. and she as little short legs. |
Yes. The first 2 Yorkies that I had did the same thing. Jumped right out of my arms before I could catch them. Fortunately, neither one was hurt. I'm offering up prayers :hands: that Gunner will be ok |
How's Gunner doing? |
Saying puppy prayers for the little one:hands: |
I am praying for him. My little girl loved to jump on the bed and sleep with us every night. One morning, she jumped down and landed funny on her back leg. It just dangled when I picked her up. I rushed her to the vet and she had blown out her knee. She had to have emergency surgery, at the tune of $1500.00. She healed just fine and now at a ripe old age of 11, she still likes to jump. I hope your little one heals without the need for any further medical treatment. They are squirmy ones, I don't have children at home any more but try and be the only one who carries them. |
I feel your pain. :mad:I had my Kayla jump from my arms as well. Brought her to the vet and they said she has a dislocation possible due to fractured distal humeral head (her elbow) He recommened I see a surgen. she is only 3 1/2 months. |
Michelle Sorry to hear your dog was injured. I actually took Gunner back to the vet last week. He was holding what I thought was the same leg. Turns out it was the other leg now. The vet told me these little guys have a problem with their knees popping out of place. She gave me pain rx for him for 7 days and to not let him jump around too much. Not sure how to stop that. She said sometimes they grow out of it and then sometimes they need surgery. She said tho with surgery they will get arthiritis. I can't recall the proper name for the condition without digging thru my messy purse for the card. But, if you need the info just write me back. I hope your little one won't need surgery! Karen |
Pippin jumped out of my 28 year old daughter's arms when he was about 10 weeks old. She wasn't holding him carelessly. He just started to flail, and wiggled out of her arms. It happened so fast. He landed on the cement patio. We were so lucky he wasn't hurt. My daughter said she shudders when she remembers it. |
I am so sorry to hear this news.. I will just say that no it is not rare for these babies to try and jump or leap from your arms. I am sure you know but you have a toddler with hair on your hands:D I wish the very best for Gunner. Hugs Vicki |
I also went through something similar. Max wasn't yet a year old when he broke his front legs. By the time I got him to a orthepedic surgeon he was already for surgery. During the surgery, actually at the end, Max had a heart attack on the table and passed away on 6/1. These dogs especially the small ones have such fragile bones that can easily be hurt. Wishing good luck and get well soon Gunner. |
Sending prayers that Gunner is back up and running around soon and prayers to your little daughter that she doesn't feel like its her fault. Jada jumped out of my arms in a splint second when I had only had her a couple of weeks. We were lucky and she wasn't hurt...but they are such wiggle worms and It can happen no matter how overprotective you are.:) |
Oknev, did you mean with or without surgery they will have arthritis? I visited a orthepedic surgent today and they recommend surgery where the pins will hold the bones together. You could use a cast but its not as effective as the pins. My Kayla has a Lateral Condylar fracture distal humerus. Tomorrow she"ll be going in,,A speedy recovery Kayla.. |
Sounds like Gunner will be ok. I hope your daughter is ok...I am sure the experience was quite traumatic for her. Yes, this is common...yorkies are wiggle worms. You did not mention the age of your daughter, but if she is young, I would suggest that you teach her to sit with Gunner and not pick him up. Children love to hug them and carry them around and it is just not a good practice. I have seen some pretty awful injuries including death from falls. When I am out with my pups which is often, I get a lot of requests to pick them up. I always say no. There is no reason for anyone to do that...they can pet them in their stroller! ...or on leash. It is too dangerous for them to have people handling them. They have tough little personalities but fragile bones! If your daughter is an adult, she will probably have learned from this experience. We all need to be ever vigilant .. these little ones can get injured so easily. |
