girardia

Widget had girardia when he was about 3 months old. Actually I think he had it before I brought him home. Anyway I gave him the medicine I got from the vet and then he had me repeat it in three weeks. I have 2 other dogs so treated them all but neither of them ever had the parasites. He had been fine and one of my older dogs I caught eating poop. I gave them all a spoonfull of crushed pineapple that I had read about here on yt. They all had diarrhea that night so no more pineapple but widget has had loose poop since the pineapple. I took a specimen to the vet yesterday to check and see if he had gotten girardia back again. Is this something that he will get the rest of his life? Can he ever be cured?
I haven't got the test results back yet but am sure he has it again.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

I am no expert but Milo had it when I got him and he only had it the one time. Loose poop can come from a variety of different reasons, other than the pineapple has there been any other change in diet?

Giardia and coccidia are difficult to get rid of and they often remain dormant and will flare up occasionally. Here is a website with some good information on giardia. I hope your baby feels better soon.

The cysts are passed in their feces so it is very common to get reinfected with it. You have to be very dilligent about cleaning up after them. I am sorry you are going through this

Panacur

You can actually go their website and you will see a very interesting view on the use of Panacur to control giardia, It can be bought without a prescription, online you will find it at much cheaper prices than at your vet and there is the generic called SAFE-Guard, i buy it on WallMart. You need to give it to all of your dogs at the same time for at least 5 to 9 days at a time, and repeat in 3 months. then once a year just to control it. The great thing about it is that is a mild dewormer that works on most common worms and tape worm and also gets rid of Gyardia if given over the course of a few days. So you are deworming the dogs and getting rid of Nasty Gyardia as well. It is safe to give to prgnant bitches and puppies or elderly dogs. It is very mild on their sistem. IOver the counter and no prescription required and many vets now prescribe this together to flagyl, ... Many years ago a vet told me about this and it really works. If you want to try it... no harm for your dog.
Good luck.

thanks

Thanks to all of you for your replies. The lab came back negitave so I guess I was alarmed for nothing. I think he has a very easily upset digestive track. If he eats a new treat or billy stick he will get loose stools. I am going to get what you suggested and treat them all at least once a year, just to be sure. He has not lost any weight and seems to be healthy so I guess he just has a sensitive stomach. I do think that for $1600.00 he should not have come with it to begin with. We I questioned the breeder she just said "all dogs get it and and it is no big deal" but for me it is a big deal. I have never gotten a puppy before with this and am sorry my other to dogs had to go thru the cure too.

Fyi, just bc a test comes back neg. for giardia, it does not mean they don't have it; giardia easily hides under scope and often needs to be repeated.

Adult dogs will not always show signs of giardia, even when they have it - so while a pup in your home has flagrant symptoms, your adult dogs may also have giardia, but show no symptoms and often will just fight it off.

When sick and/or healing, a dog w/ giardia will shed cysts all over the place - so that is why reinfection is so common. Clean as much as you poss. can with bleach water.

Puppies can have a very tough time healing from giardia. In pups, the giardia can actually start digesting the intestinal tissue and damage it - SO, if the pup has ongoing stool issues weeks down the road - please post again so we can help you with that issue.

:yeahthat::goodpost:!!!!!!

Nikko had a really rough time with both giardia and coccidia as a young pup, and we are still having some issues. He is now 6mo old, and about 85% of his poops look great (we joke that we want to bronze them for display), but 15% are still weird and mucous-y or just kinda too soft and skinny. We switched his kibble over to grain-free, and put him on a probiotic for a little over a month, but are still on the hunt for something more mild and hypo-allergenic that is also grain-free - and that is available in our area. And of course we still have plans to switch over to at least some prey model raw, if not all. I can't believe how how hesitant I am to make that switch - I'm a little disappointed in myself actually. Usually I am the type to jump the gun on a new thing, but for some reason this is taking me longer than I expected it would.

But Wylie's mom, I would appreciate any additional suggestions you have for us giardia survivors who haven't perfected the poop yet. :D

Giardia Vaccine available

Lola has had giardia and it was a NIGHTMARE! I later found out that there is a vaccine for it. The vet told me it's not very popular, but Lola had it and was fine. She didn't have any real side effects from it. I would definitely do research on it before getting it, but I just wanted you to know that it is out there.
