Death from seizure??? :( Hey guys, my yorkie is 2 years old, she has been having seizures since she was 6 months. We have her on Pheno and 2 other meds. The doctors believe she is either epileptic or has a liver shunt but its sooo hard to find out and they have done EVERY test. Now granted she has them less often she still has them (few times a week at least) sometimes more severe than others. First off, what else can we do? Second, can this kill her quickly even though she is on meds? could she die in a year? or would it take years and years of seizures to usually kill a dog. Im very worried and any information is GREATLY appreciated, thanks a bunch |
Personally were she my dog...I'd find another vet or a neurological specialist. Seizures are a symptom and not the disease. While many vets aren't familiar with liver shunt...it can be accurately diagnosed with the proper testing. What were her bile acid levels? If she has a shunt...the longer it goes untreated the more damage to her liver. |
we bring her back in about a week for another test i believe. But whatever the disease may be, im wondering if a "seizure" can kill her even though she doesnt have them as bad as others. Im hearing stories of people having their dogs for 7 years and they have seizures all the time.... is this rare or will she die quickly? |
My sister's Cairn Terrier had seizures. He was also on Pheno and some other med. At first the seizures would be once or twice a week. The vet thought that the dog was epiletic but they couldn't get the seizures under control. After many tests, Cat scans, bloodwork, etc. (over $5000) they found out he had Cushings Disease. It got to a point where the dog was having multiple seizures in a single day and he was becoming disoriented all the time. The vet eventually recomended that he be put to sleep because the seizures got so bad. He was 4 years old when he passed on. |
My sister has a 13yo yorkie who has had seizures for about 10 years. |

Mortality rate depends on why the seizures are happening. Death from a seizure itself isn't overly common as far as I know. It is not hard to diagnose a liver shunt. If the vet hasn't done a bile acids test, please find a new vet. If they have, can you post the results? |
Yes, a bile acid test is necessary IMO for a dog that is having seizures...If your vet won't do one, I would absolutely go to another vet. |
Death from a seizure results from status epilepticus (sp?) which is when seizures come one after another and can't be stopped |
