Liver Biopsy Update Well, we where given great news today from the Specialist that did Manolos Biopsy. He has very minor Mvd. This is why his bile acid test was elevated. He doesnt think the seizures have anything to do with this Mvd because it is so slight. The specialist said he is for sure Manolo was having Hypoglacimic episodes. If it becomes more and more frequent then we should take him for a brain scan. My daughter dropped him on his head when he was little and he screemed for an hour. The vet at that time said he was ok but maybe we are seeing something now. These test are very important for small breeds. He said they see lots of small dogs with these problems. Im still waiting to hear from Dr D his vet and will let you guys know. For those of you that may be going thru this the cost for Manolos Imaging and his liver biopsy was 675.00. Not as bad as I thought. Thanks to everyone.... |
I'm glad you got good news. Do you have to change diet or anything? Lacy is going for a liver biopsy at Texas A&M tomorrow..she had elevated bile acids and abnormal spots found on ultrasound. How long did it take you to get biopsy results back? |
That's great news. :) It may very well be hypoglycemia or a brain/nervous system issue causeing the seizures but just remember that they did a needle biopsy, so most likely only one (very small) sample was taken and it is theoretically possible that something more is going on in other parts of the liver. |

Wonder what procedure they could do to eleminate that possibilty? He acted like he has seen thousands of worse cases. But I will never let my guard down and will keep educating myself on this complex but loving breed. Let me know...Lissette |

I hate to hear that Manolo has MVD but, given that the news could have been worse, I'm sure you're somewhat relieved. I have no experience with this so can only offer my best wishes to you and Manolo. At least with this diagnosis, you have a better picture on how to proceed with his diet and care. |
I am glad it is mild. Cali has a very mild MVD diagnosed when she was 8 months old by a liver biopsy after Bile Acid score of 0/90. She needs no treatment. She did have frequent episodes of hypoglycemia up until she was 8 months old. |

I know how it can be getting the little ones to eat. If my Nemo doesn't eat well at dinner, he seem kind of run down as the evening goes on. I wind up feeding him something I know he likes (meat! meat!) later on and that gets his gut going. So far, he isn't t-o-o-o spoiled LOL. My little girl is getting much better. Her legs have pretty much straightened out and it's just her feet that turn very slightly in. The feet are no longer curling under either. At this rate, she should turn out fine. I'm very relieved. I'm still doing PT with her and making her crawl a few feet to her Mom. I think the crawling does more good than anything since then she's putting more pressure on her legs. Thanks for asking about her...Jim |

Just got off the phone with Dr Darrell and we are switching Manolos food to Science Diet LD. They did a true cute Biopsy and feel this is what he needs to be on...I feel so relieved its only mild and they dont feel it will progress. I will start keeping a log of his Seisures and if they progress then I will take him to the Neurologist....Thanks to all. Hope this will help someone else who may be going thru the same..Peace....Lissette |
