Chopper ate sugarless gum So tonight when my five year old came home from hockey, he left a package of gum laying around. My oldest said...the dog is eating something. I picked Chopper up and could smell the gum flavor on his breath. I immediately grabbed the package and it was Trident sugar free containing xylitol. I phoned the vet, and since we didn't know if he actually ate any of the gum or how much if he did get some...she told me to induce vomiting. About 10 minutes later he threw up and there was 2 pieces of gum. She said that since we caught it quickly that all of the gum should have came right up. She talked about watching for hypoglycemia and that there could be potential liver problems. She said that I could bring him in for IV fluids and he could stay overnight but that there is no staff there. I've decided to keep him at home and watch over him like a hawk!! I am able to phone and bring him in if I need to tonight. She also said to induce vomiting again just to make sure there was no more gum. I have done that and there was no sign of anymore gum. Just wondering if anyone else has gone through this before...and what signs I should be looking for. Or if anyone has other advice? He has eaten and had fluids since the vomiting...hopefully that is okay. I am worried sick not knowing how long until I'm out of the woods. |
Hopefully the vomiting got the gum out of his system before any xylitol was absorbed. I read that symptoms can show up as early as 30 minutes to 12 hours later if a small amount is consumed. Watch for signs of hypoglycemia (lethargy, white gums, shaking, staggering, cool temperature, seizures). It usually takes more to damage the liver so you're probably okay, espeically if you aren't seeing hypoglycemia symptoms. |
How's Chopper this morning? Sending thoughts and prayers your way. |
He seems to be doing all right. Still not back to his normal self, but I think he will be fine. He has vomited a few times but I'm thinking that it is more from the peroxide. He has been picking at his food and drinking...so I'm not worried about that. Does anyone know how long it will take the peroxide to be absorbed into his system? It still seems to be upsetting his stomach. |
I'm sorry to hear about your little guy! I wish I had some advice to give, but I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. I hope he gets well soon! |
I had to use peroxide to induce vomiting in Penny once -- little brat pulled my purse off a chair, opened it and ate four Tylenol capsules blister packs and all. She seemed to recover from the whole incident pretty quickly-- it happened in the late morning, and by the evening she was eating well and acting as if she had never had the peroxide at all. Your baby might just be a little bit more sensitive than mine, but I think the continued vomiting might be cause for worry if it goes on much longer-- even if the poison is out of his system, vomiting for too long could cause him to become dehydrated. |
He shouldn't still be vomiting from the peroxide. I induced vomiting once with Ellie and she threw up about 9 times (mostly foam) within probably less than 15 minutes and then she recovered. |
I just think that he might have an upset stomach from the peroxide. He threw up twice last night and then once first thing in the morning. He has kept his food down since then. He's just being a little bit more sucky than he normally is, but he was playing earlier. I'm sure he will be okay...I'm just glad that Yorkie Talk and it's members are here with great advice. Thanks everyone!! |
