Yorkie with a cold is it really bad? So I just adopted a female yorkie yesterday and she seemed fine and healthy, but i found out she was only 7 wks old and almost didn't adopt her. She plays and eats but her first night, which was last night, she was coughing for short periods of time. I can hear the flem in her cough so I ofcourse called the vet. I have an appointment tomorrow morining but for now what should I be looking for in her symptoms? She's very playful but her cough sounds nasty. I called the lady I adopted her from and she hasn't called me back. Should I be really worried? Any remedies you have that might help a little 7 wk old? Any thing will help thanks. |
She is so young! Shes probably got kennel cough. If you have a vaporizer you could run it or put her in the bathroom and let the shower run for steam. Steam willl help her. Make sure she stays eating and drinking. I wish she were going to the vet today but Just keep a careful eye on her untill you go. |
I tried to get an appointment today but apparently all the doctors are booked or in surgery and the next open one would be later on in the day when I'm at school. I'll try the bathroom thing, my bathroom does steam up really fast. Thanks for the idea. |
I'm guessing she has kennel cough, but coughing is also a symptom of distemper. Since your puppy is only seven weeks old, even if shots were given they didn't take. Puppies get maternal antibodies from nursing which kill the viruses in vaccines if given too soon after weaning. Puppies should not get their first shots until nine weeks old. They should also be with their mothers until they are 12 weeks old. To answer your question, yes, any respiratory illness in a puppy that young can be very serious as it can easily turn into pneumonia. |
