Please Help - Liver Shunt? i need help came home from work and found my 9 month 3 1/2lbs half died like shes in a seizure.when i first brought her home bout a month ago that morning found her having seizure gave her some sugar water and after minutes she was fine but this time just seems a little long.first time after i gave her some sugar water it took bout 15 min and she got up and started playing but she just seems to be so weak this time.i need help dont have the money to get her to vet.how long do seizures usally last and this time she not the same like the last.any thing i can do:( |
Please, Please get her to a vet ASAP.... other than that i dont know what to tell you. |
How is she now? You definitely need to take her to the vet for a checkup. I suggest having a blood panel and a bile acid test done as well. Hypoglycemia can cause seizures and they are sometimes a symptom of liver shunt. Can also be epilepsy. |
She probably had hypoglycemia when she was a puppy, but this is something different. Seizures should only last a minute or so. If she is having a true seizure for 15 minutes, this is a life and death emergency and you must take her to your vet now. I agree with MyFairLacy. What you describe sounds like a liver shunt which is very common in Yorkies. She needs to be tested. |
Its late and im just now seeing this, I agree with the others, and I hope shes been seen by a vet by now. keeping her in my thoughts and prayers. |
you need to get this baby to the vet. If you cannot afford it, do the most humaNe thing you can do and turn her over to a rescue that can get her the help she needs. If you do nothing this baby could die. |
How is she doing now? This is serious - I hope you have gone to the vet |
Sending prayers for this little one.... |

She needs to see a Vet - as soon as possible. If you can get an AM appt. I would suggest fasting her from food for at least 10 hrs before. She can have water (no sugar though). This way you can insist that they do a Bile Acid Test during your Vet visit. I would also suggest they do a CBC has well. The Bile Acid Test will show how the liver is functioning. The CBC will show if there is anything 'else' off that would or could indicate a liver issue. Depending on the area you are in the BAT and the CBC could each run $60 to $100 a piece - BUT they are VERY important. You should get the results the next day. Then depending on what those results are, will tell you how you should proceed. AND we can help guide you, once you tell us those results. I hope that helps ;) |
Also, do you want me to change the title of your thread to "Please Help - Liver Shunt?" - so that the LS folks here will see it more readily and give advice? Let me know.... |
Thoughts and prayers being said for you and your little one! I hope things turn out okay for you.... |

Hi! I hope your baby is going to be ok. Unfortunatly the pet insurance won't help if your dog has a liver shunt as this is not covered on insurance. My Teddi had a liver shunt and the insurance did not cover one dime of it. I would join this yahoo group: Liver_Shunt_And_MVD_Support : Liver Shunt & MVD/HMD Support the people on there are so knowledgeable. This group is a great resource and helped me a lot with Teddi. |
i cant thank you all enough for the the warmth and caring advice you've all been giving us.we're just waiting for the insurance from my wife's benefits or buying a health plan.does anyone know if the health plan takes efffect right away. |

exam $38 blood panel - about $100 Bile Acid test $40 urinalysis $40 Other than that, I think most people pay about $2000 for a schintigraphy and surgery to fix a shunt if they go to the University of Tennessee. I've heard of other places quoting as much as $4000-$5000 Quote:

I have to agree with the others regarding the tests needed. I don't know anything about pet insurance, but this Pet Plan sounds good. I'm leaning towards hypoglycemia...I probably would have taken your baby to the vet during the episode for a simple glucose test... it's very reasonably priced...my vet only charges $8.00, and they have an instant result. Do get the bile acid test, as well as a chemistry/profile and a CBC (complete blood count). I hope your little one is doing alright, and hopefully will be just fine. How much does it weigh? Make sure you are feeding frequent small meals...to help keep the sugar levels up. Also, I agree, a true seizure will not last 15 minutes or more, that is one of the main reasons I do not think my yorkie...Winston has epileptic seizures. His seems to be from low blood sugar, why I don't know...he is not tiny and has never been tiny. NutriCal always brings him out of it, but it does take about 15 minutes for him to actually be able to get up and stand on his own and walk. Afterwards, he's just kind of tired. Thoughts and prayers go out to you and your puppy...may all be well...and stay well. |
