Coccidia My 6 months old just tested positive for Coccidia. The doctor is going to put him on Albon (sp?) today for 14 days. Has anyone's doggie have had that before? I have had him on Interceptor for 2 months now - thought that would have prevented parasites too ... guess not. |
It is a common problem for young puppies. It is a little surprising that yours is getting it at that age because its usually young puppies under 6 mos old that get it. As they age dogs build an immunity to it. |
i no longer have my little prissilla but when i first got her at like 12 wks she tested positive for it as well the vet put her on albon and it cleared up and she was a healthy little fur butt all over again. just make sure she gets the albon at the right dosage. |
Yea I was reading that puppies get it at around 3-12 weeks, mine is 6 months!!!! |
The albon will clear it up |
Hi, the albon is a good medication for the parasite, but after the 14 days I would test again and then in another 2 weeks just to be on the safe side. This can come on quickly and it would be a shame to have something happen when it could have been prevented. I had one litter that tested positive for it but for one pup it was to late and we lost it. I didn't know any were sick, I left for work that am and when I came home that evening the pup was very sick, two others didn't look to good either. I took the whole litter to the vet the next am and thats what it was. The rest were on Albon for 14 days and when we retested it was gone...... I feel I was very lucky I could have lost more. Had I known what it was I would have gone to the emergency vet that evening. Live and learn.:( |
When I got my KiKi at 14 wks old and got her home...she tested positive for this....once treated she was ok.... Is your 6 month old around other dogs? Play park...Doggie day care? |
Once a dog gets coccidia it is hard to get rid of. It can be treated and then go dormant but if any stress occurs in the dogs life they can have another outbreak. When the coccidia is dormant it is very hard to detect in a stool sample. Your puppy should be just fine after taking all her medicine. |
Yup even Izzy got it - I got her at 5 mos old and she had it. She had to go two rounds of meds to finally get rid of it. |
Just make sure your pup doesn't eat any of his poop, or step in poop and lick his paw, or lick poop off his bum (you might need to give butt baths or at least wipe his bum clean with a wet paper towel after each poop). It's super easy for him to reinfect himself if he ingests any infected poo, including his own. Beyond that though, the medication is a good one. Cleared my little boy's coccidia up right away. Now the giardia was an entirely different story... but thankfully it's gone by now too. Just be diligent for awhile, and I'm sure your pup will be feeling better soon! Lauren & Nikko |

Georgiemama, here is a good link. I gurantee you, You don't want it, this it is a real pain to deal with and worst to cure.:eek:Your dog/puppy can die so be careful. Get the baby to the vet right away, it may not be coccidia.........could be something else, but just the same find out. COCCIDIA: A cause of diarrhea in dogs/puppies |
Not working?! Im on day the 11th day of the Albon liquid treatment from my Vet for Charlie's Coccidia. His poop def firmed up and has been regular. Except that yesterday and today, he had a couple episodes where the ends of the poop was mucusy and wet again!!!!!! What is that??? Izzy Princess - how far apart were the two rounds of meds? How did you figure that you needed the second treatment? |
Well I can't remember how many days Izzy was on the first round of meds but as soon as that was finished I had to take her back in with another stool sample for them to check. It still was not cleared up so we went on another round of meds. Then back in for another check up with stool sample and then finally it was cleared up. It worked out great for us since we had to go back anyway for all her puppy shots so we were not doing extra vet visits. Keep us posted. Don't worry it does go away eventually but you have to give the meds on time and go back to the vet for check up. :D |
Just run a fresh poop sample up to the vet's, no need to take the dog. Hopefully that way you won't have to pay for a check-up, just a stool sample. If they see the coccidia in there still, they can just give you another round of the meds. That's what we did. Lauren & Nikko |
coccidia hi just wondering if anyone knows if coccidia affects their hunger. My yorky 3 months old has been in hospital 2 days to see what was problem not eating and diareaa .Test results coccidia and treatment 7 to 10 days of some kind of medecine name finishes with 3 numbers 125.We had him for not long and could not get him to eat much. They said vet it probably affected his appetite and should be getting him tonight after blood test. They also said he ate a little bit last night. Breeder said she will take him back and get him nourish in shape.Just wondering if we should send him to breeder or try and feed him what vet will recommend while on treatment. We love our little cachoux.Want best for him.ty tc |
I got a 8wks. old puppy back in Feb. we weren't home one hour and it had diaheria with blood in it. Took her to vet tested for coccidia. I called the breeder to let her know because vet was sure the other pups had it too. The vet said we were sold a sick puppy. I was furious at the breeder. She claimed she didn't know she was sick. Vet gave him antibotics. Dixie would not eat and pooped constantly. I was forcing gator ade in her to keep her from dehydration. She wouln't eat either. Took her back to vet after 3 days she lost 1lb. She was going down hill and didn't have the energy to fight back. My husband called the breeder and demanded our money back. We had 2 other little yorkies and we didn't want to risk them getting it. Keep them apart. We took Dixie back and got our money. I was in tears, I had already become attached to her, but I knew it was the right thing to do. I knew in my heart she wasn't going to make it. Sorry to get so lengthy, but I just wanted to let you know what coccidia can do so quickly. |
Coccida can also be brought out by stress. Puppies going to new homes, transport by plane. The breeder may very well have NOT known the puppy was sick. She may have thought the baby had a bout of loose stools due to going to a new home. And that is very common. I got my puppy at 8 weeks. A week or so later, she had it. I let the breeder know so she could check her dogs and pups. She thanked me and kept checking with me if I needed anything for her and how she was doing. My pup lost weight as well. But I kept treating her with her meds. It cured her and she is a happy 5 month old puppy now. It is very treatable. I am suprised your vet didn't tell you how common it can be in pups, especially when moved or transported to a new home and away from their Mommy and siblings. It puts their immune system under great stress. |
The vet said she had it before we got her because she already had blood in her diahrea. She was almost dehydrated and we only had her 1 hr. The vet said Dixie had to have diahrea at the breeders. Dixie was too far advanced in the stages of coccidia. There is no way the breeder didn't know she had it. Being a breeder she knew the signs of it. She was very sick and I didn't want my other puppies to get it, which they didn't. I was up all night for 3 nights pumping gator ade in Dixie. She starting running a fever on day three and convulsions. Thats when my husband called the breeder and demanded our money back. She didn't hesitate to give it to us because I feel she knew she was sick. |
Poor thing, it must have been heartbreaking for you to watch. Wonder if she ever made it? So glad your other pups are ok |
