extremely loose bowels
 

Hello, we are new to the site. I have a beautiful 15 week old (3.5 months) female, Myah. She was having a hard time with her bowels for a few days (slightly straining), but otherwise all was great... eating, playful, happy. Until yesterday... we went to the pet store to get her some canned food since my blender is broken (i usally prepare her meals myself till a few days ago) the guy at the counter gave her some dried chicken strips while i was shopping (my daughter was holding her), after she ate them she refused to eat her lunch and she picked at her dinner. An hour or so later she was having unformed bowels. She was up a lot over night (since i couldn't sleep b/c i was worried) Now since early this morning she has had EXTREMELY LOOSE bowels (still straining to go) but now the color and consistancy is changed (brick colored bowel with what looks like mucus). I don't know what to do. She is sleeping alot but again she was up alot last night. She was playful with my daughters this morning though. Could the chicken strips be something i shouldn't have given her? I'd love to get to the vet but most likely cannot make it there today... HELP...
Do we need the hospital or should i give her a day to see if her "normal" foods bring back her "normal" bowels?

If she is still having problems, you could try giving her some pure canned pumpkin - not the pumpkin pie spice

yorkies have sensitive tummies and she is still young, it could of been the chicken strips. I would boil some chicken and add some rice which is very bland and try that. I would keep an eye on her and make she does not get dehydrated or get low blood sugar. The canned pumpkin with no sugar in it would work because it has the fiber to firm up the bowels. I would not hesitate to take her to the vet if it is not better she is young, they can change in a hurry

Call your vet, but this is what they will tell you. Put your puppy on a bland diet (boiled chicken & rice) for max 3 days. See what the poop looks like. If it looks good, transition the diet back to normal food (dont just change back - it would be bad for puppy stomach). If looks bad, take a stool sample into your vet and check for parasites. Parasites are VERY common. You'll just have to pay for the fecal test and if comes bk positive, your vet will dispense the appropriate meds according to type of parasites. If not, then they'll sugguest you to go in for a visit to see if it may be gastratis or other illnesses.

Yes, I went through the same thing with my puppy. She was older (6 months) and had just been spayed. Bella acted totally normal--eating, playing, running around--even though she wasn't supposed to be from spaying. She seemed to actually be constipated after the spaying, which concerned me first. Then, when she finally started going her stools became loose. I thought maybe it was something related to being spayed, like her system was just off. But then, for some reason, I decided to call the vet just to check. They said it might just be the pain meds they had given her, but to be safe I should bring some of her stool in. Well, I'm sure glad I did, b/c she had giardia (a type of parasite). It was easily treated w/ antibiotics. She had actually gotten it from my parents' dog. It was tough, since we couldn't bathe her for 2 weeks after the spaying, we had to wet her down with wet paper towels. I just wanted to give her a good bath to get rid of all those germs!

Good luck with your little one. It's better to get her checked out, just to be safe. And with our vet, there was no appointment necessary. We just brought in the stool, and then they called us to pick up some meds. :)

I have a Bella too and she was given to me as a Christmas present this last year. Everything was great with her until 5 weeks ago. My mom bought her for what she thought was the same dry food she had been on, Eukanuba. Eukanuba changed their designs on the outside of the bag with them all Pink and my mom could not remember what kind she used to buy! Well, both our dogs had diarrhea. Bella was so bad that she was bleeding. Ok, we then asked the pet store what was going on and they recommended "Nature's Recipe" and to continue the boiled chicken and rice and add a few bits and graduate these bits every day. It has been a week and her poop is soft and runny at the end of her bowel movement. The other dog is fine but the Yorkie is not back to normal. I liked the idea of taking a sample of her stool to our vet to test for parasites, but I really believe since the other dog is fine and adjusted that it is just the breed. Any recommendations or suggestions?
