Rocky Seems Depressed. We've had Rocky for about a year now. He's almost 2 in April. Lately, he seems depressed and not his usual self. Not sure if this could be winter realted or not - seeing how when we first got him he was just a pup during the winter months we've had him. Most recently we got a puppy Pomeranian to be his buddy, since we work a lot sometimes, he would have someone to play with. They played together quite a bit at first, but he is no longer interested in her when she tries to play with him. He just mopes around all day like he hates life. Since it's been cold out we don't take him out all too often since he can't really stand too much of the cold weather. We used to cage Rocky until we got our new puppy, so now that he's a big boy he gets to stay out while we're gone and look out the window. He really never liked to go to the cage when we left, but now he'll jump in there when were home during the day and lay in the bed. Does he miss his old "home?" We try to make him feel special, apart from Bailey, by doing special things for him but that doesn't seem to have any effect on his depressed nature. Thoughts? |
it could be winter! i know a member on here who does light therapy with her dogs because the lack of sunlight in the winter really gets to them- i know it is just horribly cold but i think you are getting a warm spell- i'd try taking him out on his own- no puppy- for walks and see if the sun light and one on one time help. Also- you are right- he isn't a puppy anymore- and probably at first his new friend was fun- but gosh darn it she just isn't going away :p she is probably a bit much for him now- until she settles down. |
Are there anything tense going on in your house. We are going through such a mess right and Piper isn't himself either. I really think they can tell when somethings not right. |
Mine is like that too. What I do is bring him out every day. When its too cold, I bring him out for car rides and to the stores that allowes dogs or sometimes set up play dates. I also try to play as much as I can with him at home. I can see him feeling more perked up after going out and same goes for me. |
Welcome to YT. Sorry Rocky is not being himself. :( Is he eating alright? Is anything else going on? I know mine are more lethargic during the winter -- they love to be outdoors and this weather doesn't allow it. Sounds like his crate is a place of comfort - a lot of dogs like to just feel secure in their crate. It was 58 here today in Iowa - hope this warm weather is coming your way and you can get outside, and see if that perks him up. When was the last time Rocky saw the vet? |
Rocky probably hasn't been to the vet since he was neutered, which was back in 8/28. Bailey goes frequently since she's a pup. We should probably take him along for a check-up next time we take Bailey for her shots. Eating has been usual for him, nothing out of the ordinary there. Nothing tense going on at home. I'm going to take him home to my parents house Sunday, which he usually loves, so we'll see if the cheers him up. He should be able to play outside (around 50 Sunday). http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/6248/p1000592ql8.jpg |
Conner was lathargic also. He does not walk every day like we do during the warmer weather, so I put him in daycare two days a week. Now he is so tired that he does not know if he is depressed.:D |
How cute they are!! I'm wondering if his personality changed or the depression set in after the neuter? I don't know if that would be a connection or not -- I would think the vet visit would be a good idea |
That's what I'm trying to figure out. From what I can remember it was very close - I know he wasn't like this before he got neutered. |
