Small Abrasion - Need Advice Hi All, Teddy was out playing with the big dog today when his foot got stepped on and a small piece of skin got pulled off. It barely bled, but is red. I'm sure his foot isn't broken or anything because he lets you touch and squeeze his foot, but he does cry whenever I touch the wound. He isn't walking on the foot either. What would you recommend putting on it to prevent infection and perhaps keeping him from licking it? Thanks, Kathy |
Anything like neosporin to help it heal quickly and without infection. Give him special care. He deserves it. There is nothing sadder than an injured yorkie baby. :( |
Yes, I would think Neosporin is good for pets as yorkieusa says, I just found an article on ESPN for sporting dogs: When such a cut presents itself, Cox advises dog owners to refrain against using alcohol or hydrogen peroxide on the wound. "I would wash the wound with a good clean antiseptic soap like Betadine, and then I would flush it with good clean water," Cox said. As spring arrives, an offseason of inactivity is coming to an end for many sporting dogs. For your training efforts, Texas veterinarian Bobby Cox recommends a first aid kit and a dose of common sense. "If it is a smaller cut, I'd put Neosporin on it, although the dog will (probably) lick it off." http://espn.go.com/outdoors/sporting...n/2038254.html --- Glad to hear Teddy is okay, not sure if he would tolerate a bandage around the wound, but Neosporin and a band-aid may help. |
Neosporin is good but make sure he doesnt lick it off. I will give your vet a call also. Good luck. Keep us posted. |
Hi Guys, Thanks for your replys. Teddy is doing much better today and is now walking on his foot. He slept alot, which I thought was interesting, but he woke up his usual playful, mischevious self :p The sore looks much better, but I will continue to keep an eye on it. Kathy |

I'm so glad that he is doing better. Just watch and make sure he dosen't start to lick it and get it really infected. If he does you might have to get some gauze and make a little booty out of it to keep him away from it. |
