My Zoey girl has horrible breath... and is losing some teeth. She is 5 months old and I tell ya, her breath is sooo bad I hate it when she opens her mouth! Could she be teething? She hasn't been eating much and she lost one of her big jaw teeth today. She was chewing on a bone and it just fell out. Any help or advice would be appreciated. I am a first time Yorkie parent and I can't help but worry about her. Thanks! |
Of course she is loosing her baby teeth at this age. However, Yorkies are known to loose their adult teeth too at an early age. It's important to brush her teeth daily to keep them clean and free of tartar. Gum desease also starts if the teeth are not kept clean. There are times too when baby teeth don't fall out and the adult tooth comes in. Food get's stuck between the teeth and decays which also causes bad breath and bad teeth. You can also use petzlife along with daily brushing. It is known to keep tartar off the teeth and is only used 1-2 times a week along with brushing daily. She is at an age where you can get her use to the brush in her mouth. Use your finger at first with toothpaste on it. She'll wiggle around but alittle at a time. Keeping the teeth clean is a must when owning a Yorkie. Buddy is now 5 and his teeth are sparkling white and he has everyone of them intact. Chewing on a beef bone, one that will fit her mouth is also another way of cleaning the tartar off. They can be bought in any pet supply store. They are already sterilized but you just have to get one that will fit in her mouth. Good luck, |
It is not unusual for puppies to have bad breath when they are losing their teeth. My Barkley who is 17 months old now went thru this at exactly the same age. He had what we called "death breath". I manage a vet clinic and he is there every day and believe me, his teeth were checked and re-checked. There is not much room in their little mouths and those permanent teeth kind of crowd up the baby teeth and allows the food to get stuck between them. Just be sure that any retained baby teeth she might end up with get pulled. When we neutered him at 7 months we pulled those retained baby teeth and the breath cleared up almost overnight.:) |
I remember Chiki my Chi having bad breath when he was a puppy, but after he lost his puppy teeth no more bad breath! |
My DH calls it "breath that could make a train take a dirt road." :D |
Thanks for all of your replies. I think I am going to take her to the vet just to be on the safe side. She hasn't been eating and she feels so hot like she is running a fever too. Her gums kind of look bloody. I feel bad because I have tried to brush her teeth but she fights so bad I just couldn't stand doing it to her. Thanks again and wish us luck! Lisa and Zoey |
