#2 platella in the back which does not require surgery I was going to but a puppie and the owner told me this |
If a young pup already has a grade 2 LP, I would expect it to get worse and surgery may be necessary. It is probably about $1000-$2000 per knee. |

My Zada had grade 3 in both knees, so both were operated on at the same time. Azrael has a grade 2 in both knees, and it hasn't changed in 3 1/2 years. Now Razael was holding her right back leg up and walking like that for about an hour, so looks like she is having a problem. If she gets to the point where she keeps it up, then she will need surgery. She wasn't in any pain. I didn't even know Zada needed surgery. She wasn't limping at all. |
I have two yorkies with one having grade 3 in one knee and a grade 2 in the other and the other yorkie with both grade 2's and I still haven't had surgery on either yorkie and don't plan on it because both are controlled with weight control and no jumping off and up on things. Both walk fine with no limp and as long as they are NOT in pain or limping I will not do surgery. Every now and then one will pop one out of place but I just put it back and since both weights are controlled I have not had any problems with limping or hurting. My Pixie started with a "slightly off" LP - by the time she was a year old, she had grade 4 - and had to have both her back legs pretty much rebuilt. Then she had to relearn to walk again. Twice. I didn't know when they first told me that "her knees are a little off, but we'll wait and see as she grows whether it gets better or worse" meant that she was going to have the problems she ended up with. And it cost about $2000 with discounts to do all the surgeries she needed on her legs. Luckily I didn't have to pay it, but I know how much the store I bought her from had to pay. I would beware of a puppy with this problem unless you have that kind of extra money laying around - or the breeder/seller is willing to cover ALL genetic defects such as this. That's the best advice I can offer from my experience. I hope it helps. |
thank you for letting me know? Now I just need to decide between a little girl or little boy!!! |
