Suddenly not jumping??? My dog is 6-1/2 years old now, and she has been a healthy dog with no issues. We suddenly noticed at about 7PM that she seemed to not be jumping up as much. And now, it's for sure that she won't jump up on the couch (something she usually does easily). She seems to make the effort, but it's almost like her back legs don't have the strength or she doesn't trust them to propel her up enough. She is a little tired right now as per usual this time of night, and if we encourage her to walk, it looks like she is walking fine. About 30 min ago, I threw a toy and she trotted over and got it (after encouraging her with, "go get it!" a couple times). She seems to be acting about the same as usual...maybe a little more snuggly than usual. I just am not sure if this is serious and needs to be checked out now, or if I should just watch her. I looked at both back legs and kind of felt along the joints and bones and nothing seemed tender or strange. Any suggestions? |
This could be a back issue. I had a dog a few years ago that was just going for a walk with me and suddenly couldn't walk any more. Took him to the vet and it was an injured disk in his back. I'd definitely have it looked into and would not encourage any more activity tonight. |
This sounds strange...I'm not sure I know what the problem is. However, I know that a lot of yorkie's have "luxating patellas" (mine included). The vet who diagnosed her with this, said it may not affect her now (she's only 2), but later on, it definitely could. He suggested getting a surgery to fix it, before it causes severe arthiritis. I think your pup is young though to be dealing with arthiritis, but I don't know. If I were you, I would just monitor her for a couple days and see if anything changes. If not, and she still seems weak, I would definitely take her in. However, I really wouldn't try to force her to jump or do something that might hurt her even more. It might make things worse. If your baby starts to change her eating habits, or seems unusually lethargic, I would definitely take her in asap. Good luck!! It's so scary when things don't seem right with your little one....just keep your eye on her, and I always think if I have that wrenching feeling in my tummy that something's just not right, I would take her to the vet. :aimeeyork |
