Downward Dog
 

6:23 pm. Toby has just started doing this Yoga movement. He has been sick for the last couple weeks, Today the vet prescribed Keopectate, Panacure and Metronidazole. He had the dose of Keo. and metro. @ an hour ago. The pana. went on his food which he was hand fed but has only eaten 1/4. He has just started doing the downward dog and he has never done that before. Is he feeling better or feeling worse?

They will do posturing if in pain/discomfort. Marcel used to do that when he used to have digestive issues. That panacur is going to purge a lot of stuff from his system - and w/ Kao and Metro - his digestive system is probably quite amped right now. To me, this is a lot to give at once.

What is the diagnosis?

I've posted in another thread, "Is he testing me." Training forum. In the last three weeks he has had varying stages of Diarrhea and has had 7 or 8 bowel movements a day. This morning he went out and did the closest shape to normal in a while. He did not eat and had to go out @ hour later, and it was basically liquid with clots of blood. The diagnosis is stomach problems with unknown cause.

Aww, poor baby, sounds like he's uncomfortable:( How old is he and what are you feeding him?

Thanks, yes he has been very uncomfortable. He is 21 months and weighs 16 lbs. He was (is) eating blue buffalo, chicken broth and boiled chicken. I changed the chicken to rice, and it started to firm things up. Then this morning it went liquid. He has not eaten all day per vet until dinner. He hated the panacure on the food so we mixed it with a little broth and syringed it. He has only had a few treats to get the taste out.

So the upset tummy just started out of the blue a couple weeks ago? Were you trying to switch his food or could he have eaten something he wasn't supposed to? What tests did the vet run?

I would think he's old enough and big enough to go without the kibble for a bit. I've done the chicken and rice with a little pure pumpkin - just enough to help absorb all the meds. Hope he's feeling better soon!

This all started @ 3 weeks ago when the weather got really cold. My initial thought was possibly paw licking form the stuff they put on the roads. He had what I think was frost bite, so I thought it might have been stress related. Yesterday things were looking good, and he ate most of his dinner. He had to go out at 3am. That deposit looked pretty good. Getting back to normal. He went out first thing and did a small bit, Shape was coming right along. Then we came back in. @15/20 minutes later, I sat at the computer and he started whining. I thought it was cause I was eating and I hadn't fed him. He left the room I went into check him on the bed. He was shivering. I let him out, He stood trembling on the deck. I coaxed him out to the yard, and this time it was liquid with what looked to me llike clots. The vet said that was what it looks like when an animal has diarrhea for a while, the stomach gets irritated.

Wish I had some advice for you, just want to say, I hope it's nothing serious. I know it's so hard when these little guys are in pain.

Oh my goodness. This is not normal at all. Did the vet do a fecal test? Has giardia been tested for?

Have you considered getting him entirely off the protein source he's currently on?

You may want to get a different opinion from another vet.

Poor baby, I would get a second opinion. Also like Ann said try a different protein source he hasn't had before to see if he is allergic to the chicken. You could try lamb, whitefish, Bison to name a few.

Yes, He's had fercal tests last Friday and wed. both negative for Giardia. Last night We slept through the night and this morning he ate 3/4 of his breakfast and Has had a dose of the Metrol. He has not moved his bowels this am. but all else seems normal. We are driving for 8 hours today, so I hope all goes well.

Must be worrying you sick. Hope Toby is actually on the mend. Let us know how the 8 hr. drive goes. Guess that means you are going to be away from your vet. Double hope that things go well. ~Joanne~

When I first brought Madison home (he was an abandoned, starving, matted little guy), he had gastro-intestinal issues like you are describing. He never had really any clotted blood passed, but I could see a little blood in some of his stools. He always did that "Downward Dog" pose and he still does. I didn't have the money for the vet to do extensive testing, but she said that he had some sort of gastritis and without doing a lot of testing, it would be difficult to know precisely what it was. She put Madison on Pepcid AC (generic was fine she said) 1/2 tab a day (Madison weighed about 3 lbs then, he's since gained a lot of weight), and said to feed him the Hill's W/D. Which my other dog was already on after a bout of pancreatitis before. Madison has improved so much since then, it's amazing. His stools are normal now and have been since soon after starting him on this regimen. He still has a lot of "snuffling" or "reverse sneezing" which she said is also related to his gastric issues. But it's not as severe as it used to be and he does his Downward Dog a lot less than he did too. I feed him the W/D and mix a little rice/turkey in with it (I make this myself and freeze it in small containers) and it seems to keep him on an even keel. She originally told me to give him the pepcid a/c for a month and then gradually cut it back to 1/4 tab a day and eventually stop it, but it seemed like he would start having issues if I changed anything, so I have just continued to give it to him (1/2 tab) daily. The rice and turkey seems to keep his tummy settled, so that's why I give him it in addition to the canned W/D.
