Coughing?? My little boy is almost 4 months and does this kind of coughing thing sometime. One time I wasn't watching him with his bully stick and it got stuck to the roof of his mouth and he made the exact same sound as now, so I keep thinking he is choking but he doesn't have anything in his mouth. He is utd on his shots and he hasn't interacted with any other dogs beyond my other pup who is healthy and he hasn't seen a groomer either. I would much rather avoid the vet bill unless it is needed, but I can't seem to find anything that it could be. He doesn't do it all the time either. He did it probably 4 times this morning before 9 and I haven't heard anything since. Yesterday he did it 3 times in the afternoon and nothing until this morning. Sorry maybe too much information, but trying to think of everything that I could to tell you guys. |
It could very well be kennel cough. Is it a hacking, kinda honking sound? Kennel cough is like when people get a cold. There is nothing that can be given to fix it but he SHOULD be on antibiotics to prevent it from becoming pneumonia (Which i can do without these meds... and which might kill him). In the mean time- and while he is on the antibiotics- try a warm air humidifier, near his bed at night. Also when he is on the antibiotics he should be on some pro biotics- either in pill form or in yogurt- as the antibiotics can be horrible on their little systems. |
Sick Puppy - Help!!! My sweet London is only 10 weeks old. She had a similar cough. We took her to the vet and he provided medication for Kennel Cough. It's going on two week. It has decreased; however, she is now throwing up water (or clear liquid) every hour. Any ideas? |
I looked on youtube for kennel cough sounds and it sounds exactly like that, but I don't understand how he could get kennel cough when he is utd on his vaccines and hasn't been anywhere. |
My vet has said if they have kennel cough you can rub their throat and they start coughing alot. |
Did he get the bordetella shot? Sometimes even when you get them that vaccine, they'll get kennel cough anyways. |
I took Kayla in last week because I was afraid of collasped trachea. (sp?) She makes these funny little noises anyway when you pick her up but this scared me. I rubbed her throat and it stopped. My vet said she did not think thats what it was. She thinks it just like a reversed sneezing. SHe gave her a shot and pills to take for a week for allergies. I gave her a couple of the pills and stopped. I know I am a fanatic but I am scared of some of the meds too. She has been doing fine. Maybe your baby has like some kind of allergy. There is so much in the air and they are so close to the floor that my vet even ask about cleaning products. If I had changed lately. Hope your baby feels better soon. They are just so little and it scares me if she sneezes. lol!!! |
He did get the bordetella shot if it is the stuff up the nose right? I only use green products since I brought him home. He is 23 weeks old and I have had him since he was 9 weeks old. Are there any other signs that I can look for that it is clearly kennel cough. If he ends up not having kennel cough and I give him the antibiotics and the pro-biotics.....then nothing will happen to him right? He will be okay? |
Is your puppy mostly making the noise when excited? My Bella makes a terrible coughing/hacking noise when she gets excited but the vet said it was just reverse sneezing. She's three and a half years old and has been doing this since we got her. The vet recommends massaging her throat area (when she's hacking- is seems to help). Others have recommended manually opening her mouth for a second (that seems to help but I think it's just more of a distraction than a therapeutic response). Did you get her from a breeder? Perhaps checking with the breeder and seeing if she is having similar probs with any of her other pups? Good luck! :) |
I SAY TAKE HIM TO VET...JUST TO BE SURE IT IS KENNEL COUGH AND NOT SOMETHING ELSE....HE NEEDS TO BE ON MEDICATION TO AVOID GETTING http://kona.kontera.com/javascript/l...rey_loader.gif PNEUMONIA....THE ANTIBIOTICS AVOID PNEUMONIA, BUT IT DOES NOT HELP WITH THE COUGH...YOU HAVE TO WAIT AND LET IT RUN ITS COURSE... I BOUGHT MY YORKIE IN SEPTEMBER AND THE SAME DAY I BROUGHT HIM HOME HE HAD IT...IT WAS TERRIBLE AT FIRST, BUT WITH ANTIBIOTICS ITS BEEN WAY WAY LESS.....AT FIRST IT WAS 6 TIMES EVERY 24 HOURS,,,,NOW ITS LIKE 1 PER DAY......HE HAS HAD IT FOR 4 MONTHS NOW...IT CAN TAKE A WHILE FOR IT TO GO AWAY. I did a search and found the answer. He is having one teaspoon of yogurt a day and he takes 1/4 of antibiotics twice a day. I think I caught it rather early. It hasn't become a repetitive thing all day long yet so we are good:thumbup: Thank you everyone for your help. |
