Hannah has Giardia!!!!! Took Hannah to the vet today. She was diagosed with Giardia. I need help. The vet said that it could possibly came from me changing the dog food. So what food can I feed her? What do I do?:confused::confused::confused::(:confuse d::confused::confused:. P.S. She is on carpet. How do I clean that. I have baby shampoo. |
Not sure if you can get giardia from changing dog foods . . .giardia is a parasite. I found some info by looking online: A dog becomes infected by eating the cyst form of the parasite. In the small intestine, the cyst opens and releases an active form called a trophozoite. These have flagella, hair-like structures that whip back and forth allowing them to move around. They attach to the intestinal wall and reproduce by dividing in two. After an unknown number of divisions, at some stage, in an unknown location, this form develops a wall around itself (encysts) and is passed in the feces. The Giardia in the feces can contaminate the environment and water and infect other animals and people. and for cleaning your home Solutions of Lysol, bleach, and quaternary ammonium compounds are effective against Giardia.: |
Yep, clean clean clean. Giardia is notoriously re-infective bc as they're healing, they're also shedding giardia cysts wherever they are in the house. They usually catch it from a water source (sitting water outside), other dogs, bird poop, drinking from a river etcetera. |
Oh no! I've been there! Oh I'm so sorry to hear that! That has happened to Lola before and it is NOT FUN for either of us!! Luckily, it is treated easily with antibiotics. I live in an apartment complex and all the dogs go to the bathroom out front on the lawn, and after Lola was diagnosed with it, I heard about 5 other dogs in the complex having it too!! It's extremely contagious obviously. Unfortunately, it's a HUGE mess, and as a previous post said, it must be cleaned and bleached so your little one doesn't get it again. Good luck! I'm sooo sorry to hear that...they have vaccines for it, however, I hear they are not very common and can make your little one's tummy upset. It's up to you though...it's such a nightmare to deal with, it's scary to think it could happen again!! Hope he feels better soon :) |
More Giardia questions...... How long does it usually last? Are you supposed to keep her completely away from other dogs during this time? Is using Lysol effective? |
Amonia kills it.. Amonia kills it and can be used on your carpet, downside is that it smells like pee... i would rather have the pee smell than the gyardia around. You can also use carpet shampoo after you used the amonia to get rid of the amonia.... just an idea,.... good luck... |

What do I do?:confused::confused::confused::(:confuse d::confused::confused:. Giardia is a parasite and you dont get it from dog food. I wouldnt go back to that vet.. You have to make sure you clean up after your dogs waste really good with bleach or they can get reinfected with it |
It can be transmitted to humans too! Quote:
In my previous post, I stated that they do have vaccinations for Giardia. But I would get more info about it before doing that. Also, BEWARE! IT CAN BE TRANSMITTED TO HUMANS AS WELL!! So, unfortunately, you have to CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN! Good luck!!! I'm so sorry!! I know how much it sucks! Lola has never had it again though, so hopefully your baby won't either!! |
I myself had giardia once. The doc told me it could be from water I drank, or some food I had eaten at a Mexican restaurant. I hope he's feeling better soon. It makes you feel awful. |
