New Yorkie owner, heaving/coughing issues need input Hello folks, We just got a new Yorkie female about a week ago. SHe is 11 weeks old now. I was a little hesitant about getting her because I was sure I wanted a dog let alone a small dog. Well, I am so glad we did. We absolutley love her and I find myself spending hours playing with her. We are concerned though. ABout 2 days ago she started this hacking/heaving/coughing stuff every so often throughout the day. SOmetimes some clear foam comes out but not very often. Sometimes it is only once or twice in a few hour period and other times she does it every couple minutes for quite a while. I can't stand seeing her do it. I want to help her. My wife took her to the Vet yesterday and 50.00 later we were told it is just a cough and there are so many things that could cause it. Told use to give it a few days and bring her back if it didn't get better. She said it wasn't kennel cough, but it was a cough and not heaving. Not sure how she came to that conclusion other than my wife told her we got the puppy from an individual breeder and she had only been with the parents and 1 other puppy. so I have done some reading and have heard a few different reasons from kennel cough, to throat irritaion, to a virus. We are lost and very worried about her. when she isn't doing this, she seems very normal. SHe is a ball of fire and loves to play. She is eating well, she goes potty normal, and just seems all around great except for the cough. SO I have read about robitusin, can/should we use that??? how much so it won't harm her? just at night or anytime throughout the day? What can/should we do? SOrry for the very long postl, but we are so attached to this beautiful little puppy already, I can't even imagine losing her. SO anyone that could shed some light, I would be very appreciative. Thanks |
Please do not give her anything with out the advice of a Vet she is so small and so young. Take her to a different Vet if you are not satified with the answer you got from who you took her too. What you describes kind of sounds like reverse sneezing Milo gets this is the fall with seasonal allergies and we controll it with a cough supresent but only one the Vet gives us. Please do not give her anything on your own. There are many wonderful Vets out there you just need to find one that fits with both you and your dog. |
I wouldn't use robitussin on a puppy. There are several things that you may ask your vet about. -Reverse sneezing -Liver shunt You can also search the threads here and get more information on them. Welcome to YT! Hope that your new puppy is fine and you find out what the problem is soon! |
Thank you so much. I have also read about the reverse sneezing. Don't get me wrong, our new Vet seems nice had some good references from folks we talked to. We are just really worried about her. I worry about her as much as I did when our son was born 16 years ago. LOL We will take her back in a few days and see what the vet does. She actually did mention giving her something for the cough. thanks again for the quick responses. this seems to be a great site. |
Just remember, just like your son you are your dogs advocate they can't speak and you know them better than anyone else. When Milo first started with the reverse sneezing my Vet (Whom I LOVE) was ready to do a scope for collapsing trachea because she never say him do and I kept insisting that it was allergies I just new. If was not until one day when he was doing it in the car and I was driving past the Vet I rushed him in to see her and she said yup that is reverse sneezing not a collapsing trachea. Go with your gut, these guys are so small if you are a little worried about waiting go back to see the Vet again. |

Also looking forward to seeing some pictures of your little Yorkie!!!! Again, Welcome! |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks again. We are meeting the breeder later. Then hopefully she will do it while we are with him. It doesn't seem to have any pattern. She slept all night and never once had an episode. Then the first 10-15 minutes this morning she was coughing like crazy. I have been playing with her for a while this morning and it has calmed but she still does it every 10-15 minutes. totally unrelated, but she has this nasty habit of every so often eating a piece of her stool after she goes. Is that normal? she does it so quick I can't even try to stop her. She goes to the Vet soon for her next shot so if it is still going on, we will have that checked again as wel. When she is not coughing she is perfectly normal and full of energy. I attached a pic, I hope it works Thanks again |
I'm a worry wort when it comes to my babies, and if you feel she needs to see the vet now please bring her. If you don't get the answers you want even though you love your vet I'd get a second opinion. |
