Infected tick bite?? About two or so weeks ago, Brooklyn went to the groomers. A couple of days later I found a tick on him. I removed it the best I could and honestly forgot about it until a day or two ago. It looks scabby but black at the same time. It's also very red in that area- maybe an 1/2" on each side? Does this seem normal? He is acting fine, eating normally, etc. I'm going to call the vet on Monday about it but I just thought I would ask here too. |
Are you sure you got the head completely out? If not it can get infected. Is it warm to the touch? That may indicate an infection, but not always. Since he is acting / eating fine I would think it was just taking a while to heal. I hope he is O.K. :D |
Cooper got a tick on his nose once and we removed it. It then kinda swelled and was red a few days afterward. We took him to the vet, she double-checked the head was out with a magnifying glass (it was) and she told us to put neosporin on it and it should heal. If you know you got the head, you might try the neosporin. |
Take Brooklyn to the Vet just to make sure you got the head and mouth out!! Keep a watch on it, esp. the reddish areas. The Vet will be able to put your mind @ ease!!! :aimeeyork:nursing: Hugs to you both...:big_hug::aimeeyork |
I had this happen with Lucy recently, too. I have one of those "tic off" removers and used it to remove the tic, but Lucy had a very red, swollen area under her right front leg for a few days after. It scabbed up and I kept neosporin on it. She's right as rain now, but you do need to make sure the head is out. |
Unfortunately, I'm not sure I got the head out. I'd have no idea of knowing if I did or didn't. I'm going to call the vet tomorrow and see what she thinks. Thanks! |
I would be worried about that groomers place. There shouldnt even be any ticks at this time of year as cold as it is. |
Piper had a tick this past summer. I removed it yet she had this sore days later. When that healed she had this bump that was like the size of a pea. When she went to the vets to have some puppy shots I asked him about the tick bite. He said that it was an allergic reaction and it would go away eventually. It did, but it took months. |

That is exactly what I was going to say. Sometimes if you don't get the head out all the way, it can get infected. I would just monitor it, and if it gets worse call your vet! I hope he is otay! :animal-pa |
I would definetly agree with you on going to the vet. If you missed the head it can make her very sick. |
Hope it heals quickly. |
Thanks everyone! I called the vet and was told just to keep an eye on it. |
I hope nobody minds - but I wanted to post the website for the tick remover I have. It works really well and removes the whole tick. I fought a battle with those critters all summer! TICKED OFF™ the world's simplest tick remover |
