I nicked my baby's ear...please help :( 1 Attachment(s) I was trimming Mocha's ears today and I accidently nicked a part of it  I'm usually super careful but for some reason I underestimated where the edge of his ear was. Thankfully it's not a deep nick/cut...I just caught the very edge of it. My poor baby let out a quick yelp...it wasn't a painful cry or anything, it was more like a surprised yelp. It isn't bleeding but I think the edges look like they might get a little swollen? Is there anything I should do or put on his ear? I don't want it to get infected. Is this something I can leave to heal on it's own, or should I have a vet check it out? It's a very small nick and doesn't seem to be bothering him, but I'm still worried nonetheless :( I've attached a picture of his ear so that you can see where/how big the nick is. Please let me know what I should do :confuse2: |
Ouch! Sorry you had a little oopsie, and I'm afraid I can't offer any help, but I can BUMP your thread so an experienced person could see.:D Hope youre baby is doing ok. |
clippers? Can't help with the nick, but can offer a suggestion-- when I got my first yorkie, the breeder showed me how to trim the ear hair with scissors-- scary, and I never tried that... I found that if you use clippers (the small ones used for trimming--) and hold the blade flat against the ear with your fingers bracing it flat, the hair can be trimmed neatly with no danger to the ear.... just sign me 'chicken'--- G |
Ouch - poor baby! you could use some Neosporin (antibiotic ointment) on it, that might help keep infection down and it's healing. if it does start to look infected though, I would let your vet check him out. Good luck! I use a little beard trimmer for ear trimming most of the time. |

Ok long story, All I really wanted to say was don't beat yourself up over this, your little one will be ok, just use antibacterial cream on it and watch it for any redness, And maybe a few extra cuddles, and kisses will make him and you feel a little better. Good luck with your baby |
Thank you for being so thoughtful :) I ended up using the search function to find other similar threads and some people suggested an antibiotic cream, so I put some Polysporin on his ear. I don't know why I didn't even think of the search function at the time...I guess I was just freaking out a bit :o It was really late at night/early morning when I posted it, so I kind of figured I wouldn't get many responses right away, but I gave it a shot anyway. Mocha's doing just fine, it's as if nothing ever happened! I think it hurt me more than it did him, knowing that I hurt him. I'm just glad he's ok and that it's nothing too serious. Quote:

I use both clippers and scissors on his ears. I use clippers to shave the front and back of his ears and then scissors to clean up the tips and get a neat, straight edge. He's pretty good with staying still, so I never really worried about nicking him. I think I might take a little break from the scissors for a while. Can you trim a neat edge with clippers? I wasn't sure if you could use it on the edge/side of the ear  Quote:

I just noticed now that the picture looks a bit worse than it actually is. It looks like there's a small chunk of his ear missing, but that's actually just hair. I didn't finish trimming the rest of the ear after the incident, so most of it is actually his hair. I didn't actually cut a chunk of his ear off (thank goodness!)...the scissors just glazed/skimmed the edge of his ear while taking the hair off. Thanks everyone, for the help and well wishes :D |
I know if you cut thier nails too short at the quick you can use cornstarch to stop bleeding and also use some triple antibiotic. Hope this helps and your baby feels better soon! |
edge yes, the edge trims well with small trimming clippers- I position the edge of the ear on my thumb such that the blade pushes on my thumb as it trims the edge (hard to describe, wish I had a pic....) but works great- Hubby holds yorkie still and all I have to hold is the ear |
The polysporin should prevent any infection. I know you feel worse than he does and they forgive so quickly!! |
