Toby's paws are raw! Help! I know this has to do with the cold, but it might be from the stuff they throw for the snow. We have walked longer than usual for the last three days. I've noticed Toby licking his paws, and it's something new. When I got a closer look, there are spots where the "greyness" of his little pads has rubbed off and it is blacker and sort of a flat, not shiny surface. Today when we went to walk he stopped and wouldn't go any further. I picked him up and turned back, put him down he walked a little way and then started picking his front left paw up. When we got home I dipped his feet in a little bowl of warm water, and gently dried. Any suggestions? What can I put on that he won't lick off? |
What about snow boots ?:animal-pa I think you can also get some type of balm for the paws, Sorry your little one has sore paws at the moment hope you can get this sorted out, sounds as if it could be the salt stuff they put on the snow or even just the cold.:aimeeyork |
Awww, I am so sorry to hear about your sweet baby's paws being so raw and irritated :( That must really hurt the poor little guy. I just recently bought this stuff called Pulvex - it is a Soothing Antiseptic All Purpose Veterinary Ointment and it says on the tin that it is wonderful for dry, cracked skin and paws. It might be a good idea to pick some of this up for your little guy :) I got it at a local doggie boutique here in town. It look's exactly like a square tin of Bag Balm, only this tin is red. It's a huge tin of it - 9 ounces and you don't need very much, it will last you FOREVER. I paid $6.50 for it :) P.S. - If you can't find this exact stuff, Wal-Mart carries Bag Balm in the pet section (it's on the dog aisle) and it will probably work just as good :) |
Lol.. This may sound weird. But i recomend Cow udder cream:p (Do you have a cone? BUt the cone on till it dries in)...Ive used it on my neighbors GSD's paws. She is an outdoor dog and her paws are always sore. Alsmo, my brother used it on his face when it was dry and chapped from the dry air in alberta, And it worked wonders. Its pretty cheap tooo. |
Thanks for the replys! I don't have any of these things, nor do I have a cone. He's been licking his paws, and the stuff tastes salty, although it is supposed to be some kind of sugar mix that is cheaper than salt and has no cleanupas sand does. I'm looking for boots, but am heading south in a few weeks, hoping to miss the snow. |
I'm using bag balm. It was -22* (not counting wind chill) this morning. I took Lola out to do her business. While squatting to pee one of her paws froze and got stuck on the ice :eek: She pulled her foot up and skipped all the way to the door. I felt so bad. I have a pair of boots for her but she all but turns herself inside out to get them off. She HATES them! She won't use a pee pad. I wish she would. I keep one out hoping she will but no luck :( Tonights balmy forecast: -30/35* actual:shade: |
I recommend the cow utter butter for his paws. Just make sure you wash them off really well when you bring him in, and then dry them well. Hope it works out for you. |

Do you think a chapstik sort of thing would work? I.m worried asbout him licking these things off, and I don't have bag balm. |

I have tried 2 products....both work equally well. "Musher's secret paw balm" (online) and "Fur better or Fur worse" (online) I have the opposite weather problem in Texas.....hotter than a frog in a furnace. Makes their little tootsies sore and tender. |
Oops, "Fur Butter" is what I use on Presley's dry hair. (amazing stuff). Musher's is for the irritated paws. They have it on "callingalldogs.com" It really works great! |
