Help! I forgot his dosage!
 
Marley went to the vet today, and had an allergic reaction to his booster shot. The vet instructed me to give him Benadryl at 10pm. The problem is I can't remember the exact dosage to give him. Marley weighs 4lbs and 4oz. Does anyone how much Benadryl to give him. I am using the liquid children's Benadryl? I know I should have written it down, but they just give so much information at once.

The instructions I have say "½ to 1 mg per pound every 8 hours
Maximum dosage 2 mg per pound."

I would wait until someone else agreed.

"The usual dose in dogs and cats is 0.5-2mg/pound by mouth every 8 to 12 hours."

Wouldn't it need to be mls, not mgs?
Ellie's dose (when she was 5.8 pounds) was 1/2 tsp.

No, it says mg, but that is per pound of dog. Several threads say that, but my actual dosage measurer only gives tsp and ml. One half tsp. sounds about right though. I can't remember what the actual vet told me either.

Benadryl is 1 mg per pound of body weight. make sure it is straight benadryl (diphenhydramine) without anything else in it. so give him 4 mg

i am a surgical vet tech and this is what we use.

Ok, but what is an mg? My measurer gives, tsp and ml.

the ml depends on what it says on the bottle. somewhere on the bottle of liquid benadryl it should say how many milligrams per milliliters it is.

Children's Allergy | Benadryl | Walgreens

look at this page. it says:
Active Ingredients

Diphenhydramine HCl 12.5 mg in each 5 ml





So 12.5mg = 2.5mg
5ml 1ml


this particular dog needs 4mgs


2.5mg x 4mg = 1.6ml given to the dog.
1ml x


benadryl is only to be given every 8 hours.

My original post should've said, "Although this page explains the dosgae in mgs, the original poster needs it in mls because she has a liquid product". I just do not have enough practice at medication calculations and it all confuses me.:rolleyes:
