Not much response; must not happen to you
 

I have posted three times about my yorkie's problems with tonsilits and ear infections. I have only had two responses from people that didn't seem to have any experience with this problem. Do your dogs not get sick? Am I the only one that has a problem with her dog? Is this not normal? What am I doing wrong? This is my first dog ever and I don't know how to keep him well. We go outside to potty. It is winter and it is cold. When it is wet I make him go in a dry area. I try to keep a sweater on him. I try to keep him dry. I don't bathe him if he is sick. I make sure when I do bath him to blow him dry and keep him warm. I give him vitamins. I thought I was feeding him a good brand of dog food. We stay at the vets office. Why is my dog sick all the time?

Ahh....I am so sorry about your baby being sick all the time.

TJ was sick for his first year of life....It was awful, I was at the Vet at least 2 times a week. He had these horrible mucus poops, vomit, and upper respiratory infections.

How old is your baby?

I do believe ear infections are kinda common, and the meds should clear it up soon. When I bath mine, I always try to smoosh their ears forward so the water can't get in there.

i have 2 dogs...one being a beagle mix and the other a 9month yorkie that is a bigger one. just wondered if you smoke? that can cause problems around kids causing infections, so i figured it can do the same with animals. i am a smoker but limit it to the garage only. also, my older dog got a severe ear infection that put her down and out for about 3 weeks...she got water in her ear when she had her first experience in the pool...wont go close to it to this day.

Is the vet perscibing antibiotics ? How old is your Yorkie? My Suzi is 10 months old and is just getting over A bad stomach virus. She has not had the problems your is having. I know that if a dog gets water in the ears then an ear infection is most likely to occur. HAs that happened ?
The vet gave my Suzi double the strength antibiotics to clear up her illness a few days ago. She is finally doing better.
I am sorry your Yorkie has been sick. What brand of dog food does he eat? How many times has your dog been ill? What does the vet think? I really can't answer some of your concerns because i have no history of your dogs health, or age. AND mine has not had any of those issues yet. Sorry. :aimeeyork

I'm sorry your pup is sick:( To be honest I never knew dogs could get tonsillitis:confused: For the ear infections , are you keeping the inside of his ears dry during and after a bath? I am sorry I'm not more help , but I haven't had to deal with that kind of problem yet.

It's not that you are doing anything wrong--some dogs are more prone to getting infections. What antibiotics did they give for in the ears?? I am not a vet, so I can't comment on whether the tonsilitis is causing an ear infection(I work for a vet and never heard this-but as I said, I am not a vet). Sometimes, at our clinic, if a pet has a problem-we will send 2 types of antibiotics for in the ear(otomax and baytril otic) as well as an oral antibiotic--length of time on them is sometimes 2 weeks or more. If the ears continue to be a problem--we will recommend a culture and sensitivity to find out what antibiotics the infection is immune too(helps them figure out what to send next). Also, does your yorkie lick his behind at all?? Or get his anal glands expressed?? I know our Dr's made a diagnosis of tonsilitis already due to the pet licking back there and ingesting all the yucky bacteria. Good luck--hopefully they can get this figured out for you.

It just isn't common for throat and ear problems to keep recurring. :(
My Yorkie gets yeast infections in her ears all the time but not tonsilitis.

If your regular vet can't figure this out, please consider seeing a specialist.

cepha drops for the antibiotic---originally tried amoxi drops, but wasn't strong enough to get him well----otomax for the ears-----no one smokes around Rolo----he is one year old and weighs 4 lbs----feed nutri science-----would changing food help you think?-----what do you suggest on food?-------do they take out tonsils? is it dangerous? does it help?----thank you so much for you input

In regards to your first post - many of us "oldies but goodies" here at YT don't respond in the Sick & Injured area unless we have something of value to contribute. It helps keep the threads from getting bogged down and helps the op to find answers.

I guess I have extraordinarily healthy dogs. They rarely have issues that require medical attention except for annual vaccinations and and visits for the pregnant mommies and babies.

I can sympathize with you about the recurring ear infections. My skin kids had them we determined that it was due to allergies in the area we lived in (Michigan) so we moved to New Mexico where the allergies went away and we had healthy kids again.

You might want to look for the reasons behind the health problems rather than just treat symptoms. Does your dog have seasonal allergies? does he have food allergies? environmental allergies? etc. Perhaps he is not getting over one ear infection before he is getting another. A series of sessions with a highly qualifed vet, experienced with yorkies might be needed to find the problem.

I just re-read your op. If your present vet cannot uncover the problem, you might need to find a new one that will be more open minded about looking for a cuase rather than just treating symptoms.

:thumbup::thumbup: We have never had many medical problems with Toto either. We do have a wonderful vet who would refer her to someone else if he didn't feel he was qualified to diagnose and treat. If I were you, I would seek another opinion. Good luck!

My schnauzer has just gone through a ear-infection and he would shake his head all the time. We took him to the vet and Oscar shook and broke a blood vessel so he had to get a tube in his ear to drain.

they gave him some medicine and then we had to take him back (to get it out.) so to answer your question YOU are NOT doing anything wrong. It just happens. What does your vet say?


My yorkies are not having any ear infections. But I guess it does not madder what breed.

both go hand in hand. I would recommend, as I do, to put cotton in their ears as a barrier to te moisture when you give them a bath. If there is excessive hair inside the ears, remove some of it.

I personally have not had the experience but based on the great responses you have gotten, I know you will find some resources.


One other thing - check her teeth. Are they healthy? She may have some infection pockets that just sit there and create more infection in her mouth.

I believe ear infections are common in small dogs... let me ask you a question. In your baby's ears, is there hair growing out of it? If there is, you should have it cut. Our vet told us that the hair growing in their ears can cause repeat ear infections.

Go grain free. Orijen Dry is an excellent dog food. Grains cause alot of health problems in dogs.
