Lethargic Puppy Hi, I'm new here, first post. I just got a 9 week old yorkie-pom for Christmas. She's SO cute, but ever since we got her all she wants to do is sleep. She's not interested in playing or eating. I took her to the vet the day after we got her and she had coccidia. The vet prescribed Albon, and we used it for a little more than 10 days. She eats very little, but still drinks and we use Nutrical when she's not eating much. She had diahrea once the day after we got her, but just now I noticed her poop was kinda liquid-y. I've never seen a puppy that's just not interested in anything... Any advice? I have another appointment for her 12-week check this coming Friday. |
Welcome to YT. Lethary isn't uncommon with this and maybe the meds didn't take care of the problem. I would not wait a week to get her in again. If her stool is still liquidy, she could dehydrate very quickly. The vet is skipping vaccines for now, right? |
I am sorry your puppy is sick. I would try and get her in sooner to the vet and hopefully they can get her feeling better. |
I would have some concerns about the return of the D and she is still lethargic. If it were me, I would get her in for my own peace-of-mind and perhaps the vet may find something else. Good luck! Please let us know how she's doing. |
The vet did go ahead and give her 9 week shots. He said she'd probably not feel well later that day. But I wasnt expecting this to last 2 weeks! I just finished reading all the posts about little Meg and her mom in Korea on another thread, and that sounds a lot like my Cocoa. In fact, they look a lot alike and are close in age. Cocoa is 11 weeks old and weighed 1.25 pounds when we got her. I think I'm gonna go ahead and give some more of the Albon since diahrea is a symptom of coccidia. She has seemed a little bit active this afternoon. Thanks for your replies. |

Definitely take a stool sample in to your vet. Albon doesn't treat all parasites, and you may not be giving her what she needs now. |
Hi I sure hope you haven't waited to long. If your not getting any better results I would get another opinion. I have a problem now and I am going to change vets.....this hopefully will solve my problems.... |
vaccinations should NEVER be given to a puppy that isn't completely healthy. Being sick like she is just zaps her immune system as it is, and the shots can actually do more harm. Have you considered putting her on real food? Chances are she would do much better. Puppies and adult dogs that are on real food and have a healthy immune system don't get this typ of sickness. I pray she will be ok. |
Thanks for all your suggestions and advice. I called the vet this week, went in on Fri. In the 3 wks since we got her, Coco has lost weight, and she only weights 1 pound. He didn't give her shots, but treated her twice this week for worms, and told me to continue her coccidia med. The vet put the worm pill in a "pill pouch" and she went crazy for that treat, so he gave her some more and she gobbled them up. Sometimes she eats, and will go crazy for something, but when we offer it later she won't eat it. I just dont understand. I looked through all the new threads and this seems pretty common in this type of dog. We gave her some special high-calorie canned food yesterday afternoon and she ate like she was starving (which she is), but when we tried it again last night and this morning, she didn't really want it. Yesterday was the most active she's been, almost like a different puppy. |
She is only 9 weeks old which is kind of early for her to be taken away from her mom. Usually most people will keep their pups till their 12 weeks old. This could be part of her problem, but if she isn't getting any better I'd go back to the vet sooner. |
Have you spoken with the breeder? I would be concerned that the puppy is lethargic. Just isn't right --most puppies have very active periods and then nap time. |
