Nutri-Cal ? as appetite stimulant... How long does it take for Nutri-Cal to kick in as an appetite stimulant? Gracie will not eat her food even though we've tried adding all kinds of lures to get her to eat. It's not that she isn't hungry because if you're having people food she's right their begging. She not sick just being picky. Ugg...the little stinker!!! |

Joey was a really fussy eater, and it became worse during a period where I tried to find a "healthier" food. He turned his nose up at everything, I finally found one he seems to thoroughly enjoy, and even use it for "treats" for training purposes. I do believe once they reach 4 pounds you can not be so worried if they turn their nose up at a meal. Just take the food away, and offer it again in a few hours or at the next feeding, they will probably eat it. When they are under four pounds, hypoglycemia, is always a fear and they can manipulate the heck out of you. |
Gracie is a teapot, just over 10 pounds but this has been going on for several days and sometimes she shivers. This is so frustrating as I've never had a dog this picky about food. I was hoping I could maybe stimulate her appetite but may just need to try some other food. We feed Natural Balance and have tried several different formulas as well as other brands and she eventually turns her nose up at it. Maybe it's time to try raw food. Are most Yorkie's this picky? Right now she's on their Venison formula. I would certainly appreciate any suggestions. |

Well the under 4 pounds are more prone to hypoglycemia, but it can happen at any weight. I suffer from it, but really can't have any sugar or it brings on an attack. The shivering makes it sounds like she is having an attack, so that makes it harder for you. I've read that Yorkies are picky eaters. Lots of great suggestions in the diet forum, some have switched to raw, canned, or home cooked. I do think I've read that other yorkies don't really care for the venison. |
Not sure about the nutrical, I have a little 7 mo old biewer that is 2 lbs. when she won't take her treat in the morning, then I know it's going to be a bad day, as far as her not eating, so, I give her a little karo syrup right then, and then usually within about 15 min. she'll eat. Have you given her table scraps before? If so, they will get picky when it comes to eating their own food. |
I have successfully used Nutri-cal as a appetite stimulant for a couple of my dogs. I give a portion about the size of an english pea wait for 10-15 minutes and then feed. Of course, it isn't a magic pill and it won't make them scarf down food they wouldn't normally eat. I have no scientific explaination I just know it works for me. |
Sometimes it can supress the appetite as well. I feed both mine raw. Ranger is probably more picky than Ryder, but once he got used to the raw he's never turned his nose up at it. Good luck :) |
Have you tried chicken broth and a good premium dry food? I do not recomend the raw diet, i have seen many problems with that, specially stomack upsets, but a lot of good chicken broth over a premium dry food usually makes the trick, the first few times she may just lick the broth, but then she will eventually eat the food, it is fine to let it soften a bit. Usually that does the trick to put any finicky eater back on track. Good Luck. |

picky eaters I've tried every really good dog food on the market and I think that made things worse. Quigley turns his nose up at everything after a few times. I resorted to making him home cooked meals and even then if he got the same thing several days in a row he'd turn his nose up to that too. Now I feed him Innova can and Great Taste dry and sometimes he eats and sometimes he doesn't. It's a heartbreaker but I realize now he won't starve himself. |
I do not have picky eaters. I simply put the food down twice/day and give them 10 - 15 minutes to eat. Then, I pick up the bowls. If they don't eat one meal and the food goes away, more than likely they will eat the next. Sometimes it may take a couple of days, but I have yet to have one starve himself. If you change their food every time they refuse to eat, they know that they can train you to go find a new food. :) I take in many pups and never go through the picky stuff that I see so often posted. |

I started my puppy on Nutri-cal about a week after I got her. She had a good appetite when I first got her but since she is probably going to weigh less than 4 lbs full grown and fearing hypoglycemia give it to her once a day as a supplement. She goes crazy for it and she doesn't seem to be a picky eater at all. I've been leaving food down for her 24/7 but she rarely gets treats. She also knows that she will not get whatever we are eating even when she is begging for it. I think its best not to give in and worry about them not eating or else you will make it harder for yourself. Dogs in the wild are always a little hungry and never know when their next meal will come so any food they were able to get, they would eat. |
Thanks and more questions on this topic This set of messages really helped me. I have a little 6 lb Yorkie that came to my house a s a stray ( I know can you imagine) and am learning a lot. My first dog (a mutt) will eat anything and he is food motivated. Fizz-gig on the other hand, I never know if he will eat or not. The biggest problem for me in keeping food down for twenty mins does not work with Marvin there as he will eat it if Fizz does not. Fizz is finally getting better from the extreme ear infection and gum infection he had when we found him. As he gets better, he is much less inclined to eat what I give him. When he first came he could not eat anything dry...now he will eat some but never know when he will eat or not. Since I don't know how or what he was fed before, I am working on anything I can. Any further suggestions would be helpful. Also now that Fizz is being SO finiky I don't know how to get the last 8 antibiotics into him. Can anyone offer a suggestion for that as well. |
