Fleas Tami is 3 1/2 months and when i was trimming her ears i saw a flea and freaked out. (I believe she got it from my parents cat or other dog.) I quickly took her a warm bath to wash them away because they told me that they died in hot water. I had to do this twice until i had bought her a Flea and tick collar. I am not familiar on how they work and when I showered her I'm not sure i took them all away. But, if she has a flea collar do they all die once the collar is on her neck or are they on her body and because of the flea collar they don't go to her head. I am also wondering is there any shampoo i can use to get ride of flea or do anything to prevent them. |
Flea collars are not very effective. I never use flea meds so I'm not a good person to give advice but do be careful as some dogs have gotten very ill from some flea products |
I wouldn't use a flea collar because they can be toxic to little dogs. Since you only found one flea, I would bathe her in dawn dish soap starting from the face and work down her body. *side note: the reason you want to start at her face is because the fleas will flee (hehe no pun intended) for her neck/face first and if it's wet, they won't go up there, so you have them trapped* I would then wash all her bedding, all your bedding, vacuum your carpet and furniture, and then steam clean your carpets and cloth furniture. I would then get some sort of preventative like frontline, if you haven't already done so. You want to stop it before it really starts bad because believe me, fleas are HARD to get rid of. When we called the pest control place they told us that one female flea can produce up to 4k eggs. Edit to add: Oh and if you do decide to put some preventative on her, since she is so young, and I'm assuming tiny, I would NOT use a full dose. Maybe 1/2 or even 1/4. |
A very good flea preventive is 'comfortis'. It's a pill and you get it from your vet. |
I'd take the flea collar off because some of the pesticides used on them are very toxic. If a bath with Dawn does not work, how about Frontline Plus? |
If i take of the collar she would get the fleas because even though the goes outside he also comes inside the house. I was going to get frontline(the liquid thingy) but they told me she too small and it is dangerous for her She's is going to get her shots tomorrow and after she does that I will ask the the doctor some advice on frontline. |

I would definatly look into something a litlle more effective than a collar. I use Comfortis as well but I believe the dog has to be over 5lbs to be used...? After you bath her are you using a flea comb to grab the eggs too? That's key in getting rid of fleas. One adult flea can mean 50 eggs and they say 1 flea on your dog equals 30 in your house. So 30 fleas times 50 eggs per flea that's a lot so I can't stress the importance of washing linens and vaccuuming. There nasty bugs and hard to get rid of. Good luck! |
