Scratching and biting herself.. No fleas! Hello all, I have a 6yr old yorkie named Precious, she has always seemed to scratch since she was a puppy, more recently she seems to be incessantly scratching her sides, stomach and biting her hind area, at times she would scab herself! I tried new shampoo for her, hot spot sprays and flea meds, our bug guy said we have no fleas but we have the place done every 6 mo since we live in an apartment. ANy suggestions? COuld she have some sort of allergy I'm not seeing? ANy replies will help. THanks |
Maybe she is having an allergic reaction to her food. Has she been to the vet ? What is she eating? There are many post here about Yorkies scratching because of food allergies. |
I would get her in pretty quickly as she sounds quite uncomfortable. I'd ask for a skin scraping of the areas and see what's there - it could be a number of things that could be easily treated, but a diagnosis is needed. Btw, what are you feeding? This doesn't sound like food allergies, but if she does have something going on, you definitely want to give her the best nutrition possible as she's healing. |
Have you tried Benedryl to give her some relief until you get her in to her dr. Itching is so miserable. My Bubba was doing the same thing, when we went in he said to give him Benedryl and has help so much. |
Do you have carpet in your apartment? It is quite possible she could be allergic to something on the carpet. Carpet shampoo or even residue from the bug treatment. Do you use a flea prevention on her? Those can cause excessive itching. Also over vaccinating can cause skin issues. Have you tried a oatmeal shampoo or something like Sulfadine. I would take her to the vet and get him to check her out. It could also be skin mites. |

I'm wondering if she might have a food allergy. Even if you haven't changed foods, the food manufacturer might have changed their ingrediance. That is what happened with Pebbles, she was find and all of a sudden she started to scratch like crazy. Found out they changed the recipe so I changed food and now she is fine. Also, if you are giving a new treat that might be an issue with allergics as well. :) |
It could definetly be an allergic reaction. I brought Piper to the vet because he was chewing himself to death, and I couldn't find fleas on him. It took the vet about 2 minutes for him to find them, so he put them on a new flea medicine, and had me change his food. He's doing great now. |
Thanks all concerned I made an appt for Precious for the vet. I haven't changed food ever, give her the same two kinds of treats since a puppy and the onlyh thing I could think of is the people who lived here before me had cats.. the carpet wasn't replaced,, maybe she;s allergic to cats?! Her visit is on Tues, so I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks |
