EMERGENCY- chocolate eaten OMG, Toby & Cricket got a hold of a Ferrero dark chocolate with extra chocolate inside. What do I need to watch for or do about them getting that much chocolate?? :cry8: |
Figure out how much they ate and how much they weigh. I would call your vet with that information and see if they want you to induce vomiting. Here are some websites with more information: Chocolate and Dog Poisoning Chocolate Toxicity in Dogs |
If they ate the whole thing and it is too late to induce vomiting or your vet doesn't want you to do that, they need to go to the er immediately. |
Yes, I agree with the others, call your vet ASAP, dark chocolate is especially bad, and affects the nervous system. It can also cause internal bleeding. See this link for more details, but call or go to your vet first. It may not be too late to induce vomiting. Animals/chocolate and dogs |
My brother's yorkie ate a 70% chocolate bar while they were away for about an hour or two. By the time they got home he had vomited several times but was having troubl breathing. They rushed him to the vet and they gave him charcoal, fluids etc and $300 later and a couple hours they got to bring him home. Vet said much more time and could have been fatal. Bet they'll be a little more careful in the future |
I hope you took everyone's advice to call the vet. Please please please update when you get a chance. Prayers sent to you and your babies. |
You have had some excellent suggestions already.....but I wanted to let you know you and the pups are in my thoughts. |
Toby & Cricket UPDATE Thank you everyone for all your help. I did call the vet, & he said to give them salt to induce vomiting, and I did, and they did. And so far so good. I am still sitting with them and keeping an eye on them. Vet said he was really concerned about Miss Cricket, be cause she is so small, said she may not make it. BUT!!! she has eaten a little, and was up running around and playing with the other dogs, so I think she will be ok. Again thank you for all your help & prayers. I will give another update in the morning. HUGS Debi |
Hi Debi, So glad to hear that they're doing better... I just wanted you to know you and they are in my Thoughts and Prayers.... |

I'm surprised he suggested salt instead of hydrogen peroxide, because too much salt can be poisoness, and if they don't vomit, it seems like that in itself could be bad. Hope your baby is doing better today. |
Hope your babies are doing ok today. You may want the vet to check out your babies anyway. I had an incident 2 weeks ago, where Cali got one of Maya's pills. Called my vet and she told me to give her 1 teaspoon of hydrogen Peroxide to induce vomiting and if that didn't work to bring her right in and she would put something in he eye to induce vomiting, which she hated to do because it is harder on them than the HP and she would give her some charcoal. Thank God I had bought the hydrogen peroxide a couple months ago thinking I should have some on hand. She thew up the pill within 3 minutes of the HP. I have been telling everyone I know to make sure they have HP on hand. |

YES, HP is a must ! my Suzi ate a bunch of choclate too, and I had to make her throw up . It was so bad , but, she turned out fine. |
Thank you Patti for reminding me. I have some but it's old. I got your reply when I was at the grocery store and I bought some. :) I hope Toby & Cricket are doing better today! |
Those eye drops are what the ER vet used to help Gizmo when he got into the rat poisoning that time. I had started the HP at home and on the way and they did that also when we got there. Yes, it's nasty stuff, but effective. I honestly didn't think he'd had time to ingest that much, but the vet said that he threw up three good sized piles even after we arrived. |
