Sick Yorkie- Problem Seems Difficult to Diagnose Hi all, I am new to this board and desperate to help our little dog. She is 6.5 years old. We took her in about a month ago because she had been throwing up, then peeing in the house. The vet tested her urine and found sugar, but not UTI. So, we did a blood test but no diabetes...it came up with a rare disease called primary Renal Glycosuria. He said it could be a result of a UTI that was not caught in the urine sample. So, we put her on antibiotics. We tried three different ones over the 10 day span because they kept making her throw up. We tested her urine again and it was bettter...no problems. But because she was stilli going in the house, the vet put her on estrogen. She was doing great and we thought all was well. Last night, she kept waking up to go outside, about every hour. She peed 5 times in the house in the matter of 5 minutes. She has been really thirsty and has thrown up everything she drinks in the form of a watery mucous. So, now I don't know what to think. I really thought she was cured...now she is back to peeing in the house and throwing up. I am going to call the vet again, but if you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them. We are expecting in 5 days and I know with a new baby this is going to be harder and harder to handle. Thank you!!! |
Oh gosh, how frustrating. First, WELCOME and congrats on your new baby - well, and your soon-to-come new baby, lol :)! Bless you for taking in a 6.5 yr old yorkie. It still sounds a bit like diabetes, with some of those symptoms - but it appears not to be. They did a fasting glucose level to confirm that, I assume? I guess I'd be asking for a full kidney panel to see if there is something wrong there. I would want them to re-test the urine as well. There is clearly something wrong w/ this baby and I do hope they can find an answer. She may need something for her tummy as well - pepcid, sucralfate, even Pepto can help. But, it sounds like there is a lot more to it than just this. Please keep us posted and all the best to you. |
Cushings Disease is a possibility that comes to mind: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...epto-shot.html It's more common in cats, but there have been cases of transient diabetes in unspayed female dogs. Has she been spayed? I'd suggest consulting an internist or taking her to a vet school if you have one close. |

Could you just go to an internist and get the diagnostic process over with? Has the vet checked for stones or have they decided not to based on the urine results? |
