limping, in pain. please help. my 8 months old yorkie is in pain. i was in the bathroom when i heard a small yip from him. he's started to limp on christmas day. which is 3 days ago. i notice today ( 3 days later ) it look alittle better, but still some limping going on after that, he just limp his rear left leg. * he follows me just like before. * he eats and goes to bathroom just like before * he tend to sleep more. * he still plays with his toys. * He use to running around the house really fast, then *humps* something then goes to sleep. ( ever since the limp. he stop running really fast, and *humping*. * he bites me when i touch his left rear feet, yet sometimes he does not. * i check everywhere, seems like nothing from outside. other info: sometimes i see him walking normal, like nothing happened. after a few more steps, he started to lift his rear left foot and limp. same as running. i also try to make him stand on my hand. i notice his left rear feet ( can't stand up ), while his right rear feet have strong pull. does anyone know what is the cause of this? i called up a vet and ask. she said it might be a muscle pull. how long does MUSCLE PULL LAST??? |
He might have a luxating patella in that leg. They are very common in Yorkies. Your vet will need to palpitate his knees to find out. Here is some information: LUXATING PATELLA (KNEE CAP) |

If it is slowing him down, he is likely in pain. It could be luxating patella or a muscle pull or something else altogether different. Since it has been 3 days and he isn't totally himself, I would take him to the vet and talk to her about pain meds. |
thanks guys for reply. o he is acting like himself. when anyone have food. he follows them. basically. it't a normal yorkie with a limp leg. and he got to limp after fell from sofa or trying to jump to a high sofa. i was in the bathroom when he yip. and he started to limp. |
sorry. i was not able to edit my posts... additional info: i just try to play food with him. and usually when i have something in my hand ( food ) he will try to jump and grab it. he just tryed and failed. :eek::eek: he jump up not even a inch, and stop jumping. then turn to sit-down mode . also, he just try to chase me to. after few seconds. he started to limp. but went back to normal after that.. then limp. just changes every 3 seconds. |
limping in pain Hi, A muscle pull can last any where from a few days to a few weeks. Keep an eye on your little guy and if it presists take him to the vet. Try and keep him from doing things like jumping and standing on hind legs till the injury heals. Our little guy had a simular problem and we never did figure out what he did. yes. compare today and the day started he is better. i start seeing beter walks. runs. ( less limps ) should i give him anything? like a pill to ease to pain? i think it's a muscle pull. i told the vet girl the story, she said it might be a muscle pull. thanks everyone for replying so fast. |

The video's don't really show much. I can't tell that there is a limp or that he is in pain. If he was in pain, I don't think he'd be running around or jumping. I'd take the dog to the vet if you are concerned. |
The videos are so blurry it's hard to tell. He's been limping for 5 or 6 days now, hasn't he? I'd take him to my vet tomorrow if I were you. Only your vet can tell if it's just a pulled muscle or something more serious. |
thats the weird part. if he broken his bone, he can't jump.. or run fast i called up the vet the girl told me to wait few more days. |
If he's limping, something is wrong - and continuing to not improve is a sign that a vet visit is truly needed. Keep in mind that dogs don't even show the extent of the pain they are in, when they are in pain - so he could *really* be hurting. In your post above, you indicated you tried to get him to "jump" for a treat - I would stop that immediately. Not knowing what is wrong with him, making him try to jump could be very painful and cause further damage to his leg. Please bring this baby to the vet asap. |
Did the vet tell you to wait or the vet tech? Vet techs only have to have one year of vet education and one of general studies to get a degree. Some are very good and some are not. They may not have any experience whatsoever. I just talk to the vet right away instead of trying to figure out if they have enough experience to answer my question... If he is getting better, everything may be fine but if Ellie was limping for even a day or two, I think I'd take her in just to make sure everything was okay. |
i don't see how a visit to the vet could hurt, i would just go to make sure everything is ok and not wait any further |
