I can feel her hip bones!!!! Hi, I am really just wanting to get everyones opinions. Abby is a year and 3 months old, and is very small. She weights 4 lbs and just feels boney. When I first got her when she was 8 weeks and had a really bad blood infection that put her in the hospital for 2 weeks because she would not eat or drink, finally I took her to another vet and they did a blood test and she finally started eating on her own. But....I am wondering is it normal to be able to feel there hip bones and spine? She eats dry food, and gets canned food once a day. Thanks for anyones help |
I have 3 yorkies and Cali 3 1.2 years old and 5 1.2 lbs is pretty stocky, Pixie 3 years old is almost 4 lbs and very solid feeling, then Roxie from the same breeder is 4 lbs but tall and skinny. My husband always said he hated feeling her bones when he held her. She is now starting to fill out more. I would say as long as your vet thinks she is healthy just give her a little extra food or a healthy treat. |
If she is truly underweight, you might want to give her treats of peanut butter, a little cheese, cottage cheese etcetera. What are you feeding right now as far as brands? Maybe switching would stimulate a better appetite. |
I have been through several dog foods. Right now she is eating Purina puppy chow. She really likes it, and my vet said if she will eat it, there is no bad dog food except ol roy. He says she is healthy, but she could stand to gain half a pound. I will try the peanut butter and cheese. Thanks for your suggestions. |
I would get her on a premium dog food. Purina Puppy Chow is really not much better than Ol'Roy. They both are full of fillers and she isn't getting much nutrition from the puppy chow. I've heard that you can make satin balls to put weight on..there are many sites with the recipe. I'm sure there are others that will give you some ideas on how to get her to put on some weight and keep her healthy. |
