Keoki stumbled and fell over - Help!!! Need Advice! So I looked at Keoki before as he was walking and he stumbled and lost his balance more than once!!! I got very upset and nervous because the last time this happened he had heat stroke so I picked him up, checked his gums which were pink, and then gave him a little maple syrup and honey. Is that o.k? He seems a little strange and is laying in his Sherpa- does anyone have advice?? What can this be?? Am I being paranoid??? Any advice would be appreciated- thanks:confused: |
Keoki's almost a year old, isn't he? And he weighs about five pounds? He's a bit old for hypoglycemia, especially since he's a good size. Did he trip on something and fall or is he staggering around and falling? You say this has happened before and it was heat stroke. Did a vet diagnose it as heat stroke or were you just guessing? Does he seem responsive or is he out of it? |
He is a little over a year and 7 pounds and yes he was rushed to the vet in the middle of summer and treated for heat stroke but i have not seen him do that since. I checked his paws and offered him treats which he ate but seems a little lethargic. Should I just keep an eye on him until tomorrow?? |
Sorry I can't help much hon, but we will pray it is nothing serious. Could he just be tired still or has it been some time? I am new with Yorkies so I can't offer much but I would definately watch him and if he is not himself within a few hours take him in to the vet just to make sure nothing is going on with him. I can't really think of much and I certainly would not want to scare you, but, I do know that liver problems can cause disorientation .. if the liver becomes enlarged for any reason it can lead to elevated levels of toxins and if those reach the brain they can cause disorientation and delerium ... that would cause a loss of balance and a "not all there" look. Maybe others know of some other symptoms to look out for? |
Trust your instincts. You are with him and you are the best judge. Did you take his temperature? Is he having trouble breathing? I tend to think since his gums are pink and he just ate treats, it isn't an emergency situation. I definitely think you should follow up with your vet tomorrow, though. Loss of balance could be anything - neurological or even an ear infection. Did they do bloodwork when he was rushed to the vet this summer? Was there anything abnormal? |

That so makes sense because his ears have been bothering him- I will take him to the vet- Thank you so much for all of your help. I do feel I panicked a bit because of the situation in the summer but he has been fine all day- thanks again for everything :) |
Are you taking him to the vet today? Please update us when you get back. |
I will keep you posted!!! thank you!!! |

My Samie has had several yeast infections in her ears and build up of wax. Their food is normally the cause for this (yeasty ears from sweet potato was our cause) however my little girl has never fallen over OR lost her balance. i'd keep a close watch for anything unusual and take to the vet again if it happens again. It just doesn't seem right to me. I know inner ear infection can throw off balance but ... also our vet has given me something called Atopica ointment and it works great for yeast infections. can also be used on their privates if they should also develop yeast infection in that area as well. One more thing. It might be good to run some labs too if it happens again. (bloodwork) Renee |
