I am so sorry about the diagnosis. We have a few other Yorkies here battling this horrible disease. I think every case is different. Theres is a lot of information about GME on the Yorkie Angel Patrol website: gme |
First I am sorry to hear about your boy. I don't have any knowledge about the GME Here is a link on it This was being discussed on another list this is a link someone shared. Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis |
I just finished reading the link that Ladymom posted concerning GME. I am so sorry that you are going through this with your baby. I'm so sad for you and Tyson. Hugs to both of you. ~Joanne~ |

Thank you all for your thoughts and prays I guess I will explain what has happened to Tyson so other can benefit from it. Tyson came from Tupelo Mississippi he is almost 2 years old and our 1st yorkie but 2nd dog. We got Tyson to be a companion for our at the time 15 yr old lab/britney mix dog (Alex). Yes Alex is still alive and doing well at 17 yr old. 2 weeks ago I started noticing that Tyson wouldn’t sit on the edge of the tub b/c his back legs kept sliding out from him. Tyson follows me and My wife everywhere including the bathroom. About 3 days later I noticed that he wasn’t jumping on the couch but seemed to be in no pain at all. This is very strange bc Tyson is very athletic and jumps everywhere. So we made an appointment with his vet for mon the days was Saturday. Monday came around nothing new except for what I explained and once we went to the vet he had a dislocated hip. The vet re-set the hip and home he went. Threw the week we went back to the vet 2 more times once on wed b/c he just wasn’t doing anything and once on fri. At that point the vet thought that is was best to take him somewhere else to have him looked at. Michigan State University isnt too far from us and they are a great vet for thing like this. Alex Tyson house brother spent a week there 5 years ago with a broken hip. The next day came which takes us to Sat he was very num to just about everything he just didn’t want to do anything at about 9:00 pm that night Tyson had a Seizure and threw up. We called the vet and he told us to leave right away to MSU. So we did. Tyson had blood work ran and was admitted to the hospital. His blood work was really normal so they ruled out a shunt right away. 1st thing Mon morning he had a CT scan of his head and this found some extreme swelling. Which brought us to Meningoenaphalitis (GME). He is advancing quite fast and they feel that it may not be long before he just cant go no more. he responds to us and is still eating but that is about it. They started giving him a steroid today and an anti seizure med today also. I have visited him everyday and we still have hope for him. We get to take him home tomorrow and just watch him and make him as relaxed as possible. The Doc says take it one day at a time it maybe weeks or Months left but sometimes you never know. 2 weeks ago our baby Tyson was 100% fine and now this is where we are at. |

My heart breaks for what you are going through with Tyson. How fortunate you are to be close to MSU, though. Sometimes the diagnosis of GME is so difficult and makes it even more traumatic for the family. Although there is no marker for GME, it is believed to be genetic. Please contact your breeder and let her know Tyson's diagnosis so she can stop breeding his parents. I am so sorry. |
There is hope Go to this group site, many of us who have dogs with this horrible disease have hope based upon a treatment out of Boston. My dog Gidget was diagnosed with a form of this in September. They thought she would only live a week or so as she went blind and couldn't walk. She is on treatment now and it has been 3 months, she has gained most of her sight back and she is holding her own. She still has a long way to go but this disease can be put into remission. The treatment has up to a 90% success rate, the sooner you catch it and start the treatment the better. Here is the link NewGMEDogs : NewGMEDogs Hope you explore this treatment and prayers are being sent your way. Lee Ann |
I just wanted to say how sorry I am that you are having to go through this. I dont have any answeres, but I hope you can get the help and support you need. |
I'm so sorry to hear about your little guy, he will be in our prayers. |
I am so sorry to hear of your little one's diagnosis. I can only imagine how upset and heartbroken you must feel watching such a fast decline in health. However, after glancing at Lee Ann's link on GME; it appears that there is help and hope. I wish for the best for your furbaby and your family and pray that all will work out. :animal36 |
