Vomit looks like pee For the past 3 days I thought London (female, age 2) was having potty accidents or marking in the house. Turns out it was vomit, I saw her do it twice this morning. Last night she kinda looked like she was having hiccups (no noise though), maybe it was the beginnings of an upset stomach? Is it unusual for the vomit to look like foamy pee? Does this warrant a vet visit? First-time pet owner, London has been with me for about a month. This weekend I introduced Pedigree dentastix into her diet....wonder if that's the trigger? Thank you in advance, YT mommies...I've learned so much from you all already. |
She weighs 4.5 lbs. Also I recently stopped free feeding her. Now she eats twice a day, 7am and 7pm. Now that I think about it, her first bout of vomit (which I thought was pee at the time) was last Friday. Can't be the Dentastix because I bought them on Saturday. |
It's stomach bile. If their tummies are empty...sometimes they will vomit bile. |
she needs to be eating more- she is tiny and her tummy is empty. |
Thanks for the responses! I'll feed her more frequent meals to prevent an empty tummy. We're going to the vet this afternoon just in case. |
I had this same problem with A.J when he was smaller. First thing in the morning, he would vomit bile. I free fed him (and still do) but the 8+ hours that we'd sleep would be long enough for him to wake up with an empty stomach and vomit. I found that if I gave him a treat right before bed, it would tide him over until breakfast. |
Maybelline had recently been doing this too and we have been having a terrible time finding a kibble she will eat. Finally, I homecooked one of the recipes on this site and now she is eating regularly. We haven't had any vomit since we started the homecook meals. I give her the homecooked meal in the morning and then put out about 2 tablespoons of kibble in her safe room at night. However, she is still not eating the kibble; but at least we are not having the vomit. |
Back from the vet It is so helpful to hear the experiences of other Yorkie owners. The junior vet was not great. (Senior vet is a shorkie owner, but he was not in today.) She had never heard of empty stomachs causing vomiting. She was clueless and straight out of school, but here's what she said...and my comments in italics -could be a virus (if it was a virus, wouldn't London throw up food too, not just bile?) -administered some fluids for hydration just in case -sent us home with Cerenium to prevent vomiting (I'm not worried about the vomit, I'm worried about the underlying cause of the vomit) -sent us home with Metronizadole an antibiotic for her digestive track (I'm reluctant to give London an antibiotic she doesn't need if the real problem is feeding schedule) -Also did mini-chem pre-op bloodwork today because London will be spayed in a couple weeks. Geez, next time I will wait for the senior vet if it's not life threatening. Also London's weight increased from 4lbs 6 oz a month ago to 6 lbs today! Vet says the new weight is healthy. I can't believe she gained so much weight so quickly. |

It is likely an empty stomach. If she is still holding food down, I think I'd give a snack before bed tonight and if this stops happening, you have your answer. If she still doesn't feel well, then I'd give the meds. As for the mini chem panel, they are planning on doing more, right? Preop blood work should be a CBC and blood panel with liver enzymes. I think it is also a bit early to do any of it because these numbers can change from day to day... |
