Bennett, not really an emergency, but... I have a 5 year old yorkie named Bennett. I haven't visited this board in a long time. I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this problem. My yorkie was born with a black, gold and silver coat just like a normal yorkie. The older he got the more silver he got. Now that he is 5, most of the hair on his torso is gone. He still has heavier hair on his head and legs. He has no black hair whatsoever. His ears are basically bare except for a few strands of silver hair. I took him to the vet and he did numerous tests on him. Nothing was found. I researched hair loss in yorkies and found that they can have a form of alopecia (sp) which causes all the black hair to fall out. Do you think this is what it is? Or, is my vet missing something? Did your vet do a thyroid panel? A thyroid imbalance causes hair loss. Another condition that causes hair loss is Cushings Disease. |
3 Attachment(s) gosh, it does sound like alopecia. Was your pup born with "silver"? Or did he just have some on his head by the time you got him? They are not born with any silver on them. They look like little Rotties or Dobies when they are born. Black with tan/gold markings. IF you saw silver at birth then it was a "blue born" which would totally explain the hair loss. He was colored like a dobie. Gold and black. I looked real close at his puppie pictures and you could see a little silver, but not much. We have dial up so it takes forever to load pictures. He does seem a little lighter than your yorkie pics. He has been tested for thyorid problems. If it's cushings, what other symptom would he have. I know hair loss is one, but he hasn't displayed any other. |
My pom was diagnosed 2 years ago with Cushing's. Her symptoms were: heavy hair loss mostly on tail, body and rear legs, excessive hunger, thirst, urinating, panting and outbreaks of sores on her body. I had her diagnosed by a specialist. Cushing's does usually strike older dogs though. My pom is going on 12 years of age. I hope you can find out what is wrong with your baby. |
