diarrhea---help! Hello- Izzy has had diarrhea since yesterday afternoon. Since then he has been very quiet, laying around....not his usual self. Since it is Sunday, is there anything I can give him to help relieve the symptoms until I contact the vet? Ive seen on this site that you can give them boiled chicken and rice? what about pepto? |
You can do the boiled chicken and rice, but our vet always has us withhold any food and treats for awhile in order to clean out the system, then give a little bit of chicken and rice, and slowly work up to a full meal. You could give pepto, but I don't think it really works. Some say that pumpkin helps with stools... I also got a medicine at petco for diaherria and upset tummies and it worked wonders on my two. |
I just had mine in the vets the other day(diarrhea), they gave me probiotics, but, also canned pumpkin for diarrhea or for constipation(about a finger full) |
The general rule is to rest the tummy for about 12 hours. Immodium works much better than Pepto. KAOPECTATE/IMMODIUM (loperamide): Can be given to dogs and cats (1 teaspoon for every 20 pounds) for diarrhea. This dosage can be repeated every 4-6 hours for 24 hours, or until symptoms begin to resolve. OTC Medications Try to keep him hydrated by giving him droppers full of Pedialite. After his tummy is rested, try a little bit of boiled chicken breast and rice, just a spoonful at first to see how he handles it. Dehydration is the biggest concern with these little ones. It is amazing how quickly a six pound dog can dehydrate from vomiting or diarrhea. If he doesn't improve quickly and still acts lethargic, you need to get him to a vet asap for fluids. Electrolyte imbalances from dehydration are very serious and can even cause cardiac arrest. |
canned pure pumpkin is great- firms that poop RIGHT up! also pro biotic yogurt will help. and yes you can do boiled chicken and white rice. Is it liquid or just soft poop? if it is liquid- he should go to the vet tomorrow- they can dehydrate so fast- you can also water down pedialyte and give some of that- just make sure it is non flavoured or apply flavoured- not grape |
Now his poop is runny with blood in it...Im taking hm to the vet in the morning. :(This has happened before. He must have eaten something outside...I dont know. I know that these little guys have very sensitive digestive systems What can I do to prevent it from happening again? |
If you start seeing a lot of blood, please rush him to the ER vet. Toy breed dogs are prone to HGE. If that's what it is, you must act very quickly or it can be fatal. Lady has had it a couple of times. Here is what to look for: Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis (HGE) |

Hope your pup is alright! Lucy gets diarrhea every now & then. I read somewhere (maybe on YT) to give sweet potato. So the last time she felt yukie, I baked a small sweet tater & gave her small amounts over a few days. This sure helped her. |

Worried about your baby, any update? What did the vet say? How is your baby doing? And how are YOU doing? I know this must be very stressful for you. |

Tatum had three rounds of diarrhea in October - the last one being bloody. Each time she was given antibiotics and probiotics and a rice-type food to eat and she got better. Turns out though each time I put her back on her Innova food, it would happen again. I really didn't think that is was the food to blame since she had been eating this one for about 3 years but I found out from people here on YT that they had had a formula change and sure enough, I discovered that this started happening right after she started a new bag of the new formula. Yes, the bloody diarrhea was scary but it cleared up right away. Once your baby gets on some meds, I'm sure he'll be fine. But you might want to think about what food he's eating and other things he might have gotten in to. Good luck! Oh, and by the way, Tatum HATES pumpkin. I couldn't get her to eat it for nothing! |
