Humidifiers with Vicks
 
Question about kennel cough.....I read here from another post that humidifiers with vicks helps out for kennel cough...I am going 2 pick one up tomorrow at Target.....Does anyone have one favorite one that u would recommend...if so please do so....also how often do I turn it on per day or hours....let me know okay...thanks....

I left the humidifier/steamer going for 24 hours the first week and changed the vicks every 8 hours. Mine takes six hours to run out of water and shuts itself off if the water level goes down too low. Toby was very congested when I started, and this cleared up after the second day. He also stopped coughing after the second day, and only had the sniffles. Since hubby and I were both fighting colds, it also helped us :)

So for a Humidifier your suppose to see steam?....I just bought mine and I dont see anything coming out of it...If anything I just know cold air is coming from it......I do smell the vicks????


Also today in the morning....My Stinky was coughing alot more...I dont know if it was because of the cold air or what

I am sorry, mine is a hot air humidifier. I have seen where people find that the steam from showers may help too. I hope your little guy feels better soon.

I just used the Vick's brand humidifier as it was the least expensive of them all. I wouldn't buy the Kaz inhalant stuff for it that you pour onto the little hole in the top though-- that seems to be DELICIOUS for nosy little dogs to accidently get into because it sits on top. ;) Buy the Vick's stuff that you mix directly into the water instead.

Definitely do the warm air humidifier - part of treating a cold (which is basically what kennel cough is) is keeping WARM. Cold, damp air would be bad. But my little boy with kennel cough loves the warm misty vicks air. I put the humidifier next to his crate, and then used towels to create a condensed steam-room-cave for him in it.

If your warm-air humidifier isn't putting out enough steam, try adding a few pinches of salt to the warm water/vicks combo inside. The directions on mine said that if you have soft water, you'll need to add a little salt, and mix it around well. After I added the salt to mine, it started working really well, and I could see the steam coming out.

Also, I just put my pup in the "steam cave" whenever he is napping, which is pretty often - at least three or four hours a day. It's so warm and cozy in there, I wish i could sleep in it with him sometimes, lol!

Thanks 4 the tips...i bought a cold one at first, but changed it for a warm one...because it seem he got worst with the cold one...this warm one is okay...i got the 445 model or something like that....he still coughs but not that much...thanks
