Bless your heart! I haven't been in your position with kidney failure, however, I did have a tragic "happening" in June of this year. My little miniature dachshund, Annabelle, went down in her back and was not a candidate for surgery. We had to put her down. It was the hardest thing I have ever done. I didn't tell you that to scare you or upset you, only to let you know that I had to leave her at the vet for 3 days.....so I do know what you are going through as far as your worrying. I don't know how one overcomes that. I know that we aren't suppose to fear, but that is so much easier said than done. I will be praying for your little one. Try (I know that's easy for me to say) to stay positive and know that you have done all you could possible do. Please keep us updated. |
Thanks . . . logging off now Thanks to everyone for the advice, life experience, and web links relating to my oh so sick Yorkie, Miss Kitty, who, it turns out, has massive kidney failure at the young age of 4 months. All the links to website material were extremely helpful, but heartbreaking, with no real hope in sight anywhere. I'm going to log off now, and I won't be checking back on Yorkie Talk until I can offer an update on Monday, after I talk to my vet. Thanks again. |
My prayers are with you and your Miss Kitty. Please update us when you are ready to. :big_hug: |
Bless your heart  Your baby will be in my prayers. |
The vet assistant said that usually there is blood in the stool of a dog with pancreatitis, and that my puppy had none. --- this is not true as dexter had no blood in his stool and almost died of pancreatitis. The bun levels are high due to dehydration and yes it is a kidney value but what was the creatinine as normal is around .9 -- I think her kidney levels were so high because she was extremely dehydrated from vomitting so much -- that is very rare for a dog to have kidney disease at that young of an age -- I am really questioning this vet place you are going to :( |
I have to say i strongly suggest getting her to a specialty hospital and an internal medicine specialist at this point as my gut is not good on this facility your dog is at -- find the best specialty hospital in your area that all the vets send their toughest cases to please as that is what i had to do to save my dexter's life -- i really hope you are checking back here ;( as we can try to help you as much as we can |
dogs with kidney issues should have very low sodium diets as well so maybe the ham would not be good -- honestly i think your dog was so dehydrated and the meds and steroid shot spun her out of control sadly so i think if she is on fluids and they restrict food she will be ok but i personally am not happy with this vet groups -- I hate to say it-- how could you treat and not take blood work at least a snap shot at vets office which i hate anyway and a dog that tiny vomitting an diarhea no doubt and not put on fluids from the time she was in there - when my dex was vomitting they immediately did an xray to rule out blockage and then they did a full blood work up and determine pancreatitis due to white blood cell count being high and amylase and lipase although the cpli and tli are the best tests. |
So, do the kidney levels also indicate pancreatitis, or is it solely kidney problems--- not those values are different --- my demi had high bun levels and bun creatinine ratio but her creatinine was normal and due to periodontal disease and dehydration -- the creatinine is the most important of those values as bun determines dehydration but the creatinine is the more critical. |
That honey wouldn't screw up the blood work would it, and cause kidney levels to be high??--(wishful thinking, I know). No salty things would throw it off if not drinking enough water -- the honey would have affected her glucose i would think -- personally she is so young she could fight this thing i believe as that is way too young for kidney disease -- I am so frustrated right now as I think the vets made her more sick |
please join k9kidney group on yahoo groups asap as they can help you with this definitely -- please i hope you are reading all this as you need to gather as much info to help her and it is most critical now :( |

my friends yorkie is living with 25% use of his kidneys for 6 years please do not give up :( she can beat this yorkies are fighters an she is so young she can bounce back from this --- did you ever give her grapes????? or raisins ? |
Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry to read the updates and that Miss Kitty is not doing well. But don't lose hope, these babies can be a miracle! As to your question about Flagyl - the kidneys (if diseased) cannot clear it properly and this can cause a rather toxic build-up in the system. Besides that though, while Flagyl is often given FOR GI upset, it can also soon after CAUSE GI upset (vomiting and diarrhea or soft stools) for some dogs who just don't do well on it. Vets often hand this stuff out like candy, bc for most dogs - it really *is* okay. But if you really talk to some vets, they'll admit that there are plenty of dogs who do terribly on this med. I do agree w/ Dwerten - I would ask for a consult w/ an internist/specialist/critical care and/or move her to a different hospital, if able, where there are specialist teams available. I'm thinking about Miss Kitty and hoping for the best. :) |
