Home Remedies for Kennel Cough? So both of my babies managed to get kennel cough... I'm not really positive how they got it. I took them to PetSmart the other day, but they weren't around any other dogs. I suppose just being in the store they could have gotten it. Anyhow, I can't afford a vet visit for another week, so does anyone have any solutions to help my little ones? Any help is very appreciated! |
I found that a humidifier with vicks in it helped Toby. I also gave him just a tiny bit of honey to help soothe his throat. He came down with it last weekend, and is almost over it now, as long as the humidifier is on. Good luck and hope your little furballs feel better soon. |
Alfie had kennel cough and I would bring him in the bathroom while I was having a shower so the steam would clear him up. It sounds silly, I know, but it seems to have helped. Actually helped both of us considering I had a nasty cold as well haha. |
humidifier and steam from the bathroom! and lots of patience... sometimes it just takes a while to go away. hope your little ones feel better soon! |
everyone is right about the humidifier HOWEVER- your pups NEED to get to a vet and be put on meds. Kennel cough can easily turn into pneumonia and then you are talking BIG BUCKS and two very very sick pups |
hot or cold air vaporizer |

Please get him to the vet! Pnemonia is very likey if you let this manifest for another week. These little guys often cannot survive pnemonia, as it can get very serious, very fast. Maybe you can apply for Care Credit, which is a credit card fot vet bills (if your vet accepts it). Or if you have a good relationship with them, maybe a post-dated check will do. Unfortunately vets are in the same boat as the rest of the world and are hesitant to allow post-dated checks or "IOU's." |

It's more likely the vet will prescribe nothing. Antibiotics have no effect on viral kennel cough. |

I did take Toby to the vet right away and it was the vet who suggested the humidifier/steamer and honey. I was told to bring him back right away if he got worse, and they would give me some antibiotics then. He was off his food for a couple of days, but is all over it now and is back to his normal self :) |

HYDROGEN PEROXIDE 10 YEA [YEA] 11/21/2008: Tom from Atlanta, GA writes: "The hydrogen peroxide for the cough works, but I did not want to wait for my dogs to drink the water as most recommended.. Since I have 3 dogs and am aware of the cough spreading to the others so I sterilized all the water bowls and applied 3 drops of the 3% peroxide with 2 teaspoons of honey for each 8 oz. glass and filled their bowls. Then I made the same mixture in a 4 oz. glass and I took out their toothbrush and brushed their teeth gently most of the time they just kept licking the brush. All coughing stopped immediately. If any coughing continues I'll brush again." [YEA]11/25/2008: Anna from Houston, Texas replies: "3% HYDROGEN PEROXIDE WOW!!! I thank God for this imformation, i just read this about an hour ago and tried it, and i can not believe my ears my 13 year old little bits has not done that anoying cough im still waiting to see if im just not hearing things but i went out side he drank this thing he loves it and he has not done the cought when he sees me, he used to cough alot!!!! when he would see me, but i just can't believe that he has not done it again thank God for this information and may the Lord bless you for sharing this with us. [YEA] 02/02/2008: Rebekah from Jacksonville, fl writes: "Kennel cough cured! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I tried the food grade hydrogen peroxide remedy. Just to be safe I diluted it to an extreme. I put 3 drops of the mixture in Shelby's water bowl and immediately (within a 2 days) she was almost completely cured. I had gone to a vet and was prescribed some expensive medicine that did NOT work at all. This natural remedy was nothing short of amazing!" |
For the cough, anything cold, like doggie ice cream, ice cubes, etc will help the cough. My old vet used to give them a little whiskey and i think honey, but, can't remember for sure, and it was hardly any of either, but, it really would knock out the cough(wouldn't knock the dog out though) |
