Won't take pain medication! Well, Maggie got spayed today and she's doing fine! She's very sleepy/groggy and is curled up on a blanket in the corner of our couch. We were sent home with some Rimadyl tablets but I can't get Maggie to take them. She has pottied and drank a lot of water but I can't get her to eat. She got some teeth pulled out so I thought maybe she had a difficult time chewing; I tried putting the pill in cheese and peanut butter (her two favorite things) and no luck. Should I be trying something else? She moans a little so it sounds like she's in pain but I don't know what else to do. Maybe she'll feel up to it in the morning but I'd hate for her to spend the night in pain. :( |
I know it's tough to do, but if you think she's in pain... We had to go through a whole round of antibiotics with Gizmo recently by actually putting the pill in the very back of his throat to get him to take it. You just open his/her mouth wide and put it as far back as you can. It helps to hold their head up. Then, I massaged his throat until he swallowed. Occasionally, I had to do it again if it didn't go down the first time and he spit it out. Also, someone suggested butter. Maybe it was Chattiesmom? |

We are going to try the peanut butter again a little later tonight. Daddy is also bringing home some yummy baby food! If that doesn't work I will try butter also. I hope we can get her to eat. She hasn't eaten all day. :( |

Strange that she's not eating her favorite snacks, cheese and peanut butter. Is she eating anything? I've come to like those Greenies Pill Pockets, but it's the same idea as wrapping it in cheese, just lower cal. Maybe she'll be feeling better today and will eat the cheese. The stuff-it-down-their-throat technique works if you're matter-of-fact about it. Open the mouth, put the pill at the back with a little poke, then close the mouth and allow them to swallow. Some people massage the neck or blow in the nose to encourage swallowing. |
Medication Problems Bella just got spayed last Thursday. Once we got home I had to give her the same pain pill. I was able to crush it and put it into canned food which miraculously she did eat. But I had to give her liquid antibiotics. Which was hell. She kept flipping out wouldn't allow us near her mouth. We got alot of it on our clothes. When the Vet called on Saturday to check up on her. I mentioned the liquid med problems and she laughed and said they had the same problem with her there. She medtioned I could get it in pill form. I wonder if you could get the pain meds in liquid form. Good Luck:aimeeyork:confused: |
Watch your pup carefully on Rimadyl. It's been know to cause severe liver damage and death in some dogs if they have an adverse reaction. If the pup gets wobbly, limp, has a seizure, or starts vomiting, rush her to the vet just to be sure. (I don't know if your vet told you that or not.) If she's growling when you go for her mouth, I wouldn't force the issue. She'll come around eventually. And I wouldn't be worried if she doesn't eat for awhile...lots of animals fast when they're sick or injured. |
Last night after I posted this I got her to lick some peanut butter off my finger. I felt hopeful so I coated the pill in peanut butter and stuck it in her mouth. After a couple of times spitting it out, she finally chewed it and swallowed it! She still wouldn't eat last night so we spoon fed her some baby food (I know it's not good for long term use, but we had to get her to eat SOMETHING and we couldn't just feed her the high calorie/fat peanut butter). She happily licked a couple spoonfuls up and went to bed. This morning she is feeling much better! She is a lot more active and ate her breakfast this morning with no problems. Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I will keep them in mind for the future. Maggie is on her way back to normal. Bhikku: Thank you SO much for that warning! No, the vet did not tell me about the possible side effects. I will watch her carefully. What would you suggest as a painkiller in the future because I know both Franklin and Maggie have been given Rimadyl before. |
You're welcome. :) Rimadyl is shown to do more damage with long-term use (like for canine arthritis) than short-term, but the dogs who do have an adverse reaction to it die of things like liver failure and severe internal bleeding. Rimadyl is a sort of controversial drug, and since Yorkshire Terriers are prone to liver issues anyway, I thought it might be important to bring this issue up. There are some stories on this blog from people who have lost their dogs to Rimadyl: MY DOG BRANTLEY Supposedly there are other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on the market which are not as hard on the kidneys and digestive tract as Rimadyl, but I have not explored the options. I've heard good things about Metacam, but all NSAIDs carry this threat to one degree or another. Rimadyl is just the worst of the worst. Just something to watch out for. |
If you ever have trouble again with a pill, you can just force it. Ellie takes Denosyl almost everyday and it can't be crushed. It can be given with a very small amount of food but really should be given alone. I have no choice but to put it in the back of her mouth and pushing it down far enough to get her to swallow or using a pill gun. Was this a chewable though? I guess with that I would crush it and put it in something soft and put that on the roof of her mouth to force the issue... |
