Sick Puppy - 6 Months Old Hello, We are the proud parents of a 6 month old yorkie, named Stanley B. For the past 2 weeks he has had a lot of diarreha, and I mean a lot, 7-9 piles at a time. I didnt think that much could come out of his little body. On Monday, we took him in to the vet, they tested his stool and said nothing was abonormal, and also that he was not having any stomach pains. They gave him a medicine called Metrenidasole, and said to give it to him until his stool hardened. We did that, and as soon as we stopped giving him the pills, back to the diarreha I called a second vet for an opion and they said to feed him boiiled hamburger meat and white rice, and continue the pills, that seemed to be working again, until this morning he had muckas diarreha when i let him out. We have no idea what is going on with him, and are worried. He seems very happy and playful, nothing out of the norm. Any help on this would be great. His normanl food is Eukanuba Puppy Lamb and Rice formula, and some hard puppy treats when he goes potty. Thanks,Joe |
Welcome to YT! The only food that doesn't give my little boy similar problems, is Innova. You can get it at Country Max or Pet Saver. My girls don't have sensitive tummies, but Leo does! Good luck! p.s. They have a puppy formula and a small bites formula! |
We changed our boys to venison & sweet potato (I think it's Natural Balance) kibble because we wanted to cut out fillers & crap in their diets. They have done extremely well with it. Now our boys are not pups but NB may have a puppy formula. Our older boy, Clarence 12, has even had better luck controlling this bladder. YEA, Clarence!!!!! |
So you guys think it is his food then. He has been fine with the Eukanuba unil now. I will go out today and try to find something new for him too eat. Innova? Do you feel that is the best one - again thanks for the help |
How long have you had the puppy? I know I just got one the other day, she is 5 1/2 mos. her poop was really soft and smelled terrible, the vet said she thought it was coccidia, and that it was brought on by the new changes, long distance driving, new home, etc. She's only 2 lbs and wasn't eating, which isn't good. Of course, we couldn't get a stool sample, so, they just started treating her for coccidia with albon. And, since I just reread and your vet did get a stool sample to check, that rules that out on your little guy. Hope your baby gets feeling better..poor little thing..I feel for you and your little guy..one thing you may want to try for the poop, is a little bit of canned pumpkin or kaopectate(can't remember how much to give, but, you could ask the vet)..if he's been doing good on the food he was on, I wouldn't change it, or it could mess him up more yet |
I just got back from the store and got him some Innova. Going to give it a whirl. Hopefully this helps him out. I will keep updated. He is a very happy, playful puppy, it is just the diarreha we have to deal with, hopefully this goes away soon. thanks for all the help |
....well, Innova is a great food...but it can also be too rich for some to handle. TJ did horrible on it. He also went thru 'the mucus' poops, so becareful with it. TJ had IBD :( |

The Metro didn't work for TJ. First we tried a single source protein diet to see if it was food related. We did the Duck/Potato RX food and then the Natural Balance Duck/Potato (I hate byproducts, so I wanted him off the RX food) the NB was better in my eyes, but his episodes didn't really stop. We did blood work, and his folate levels were sky high, the Vet said an overgrowth of bacteria in his intestines, so he said to try Tylan Powder everyday, as this helps dogs w/colitis type problems. For TJ this did the trick. He was on Tylan for about a year and finally every thing got back to normal, no more Tylan and now TJ is on a Raw food diet (Bravo and Stella and Chewy's - chix blends) |
note...I decided to switch to a more expensive better quality food for our dogs. i have learned mostly thru this site that corn = BAD! especially if it is one of the first ingredients. i thought Eukanuba would be good. after all, it comes with a bit of a higher price tag. reading the ingredient list i was shocked to see one of the top listed ingredients is corn, corn meal, etc. try to find something that says no wheat, corn, or blah blah blah....and make sure you read all the ingredients. dog food marketers spend alot of money to make food for DOGs look delicious to HUMANS!! also, it is extra to have your dog checked for Ghardia (did I spell that right?), so if you were not checked for that, please have that done. Want some more advice???? Reggie had diarrhea for a LONG time. Soooo...we had medicine from the vet's...like you...off the med and the diarrhea returned. I fed him a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice for 3-4 days...then slowly added wellness canned chicken to this...increasing the dog food until there was no "regular" chicken in it...then slowly added Taste of the wild bison/venison formula....proceeding the same way...decreasing the canned to kibble....eventually feeding just kibble You can also give a tablespoon daily of plain canned pumpkin. Reggie got that also...but a tablespoon of yogurt. The pumpkin reduces the moisture and the yogurt for the good bacteria in his intestinal tract. We now have good poops. Yay! :rolleyes: LOL |
Is corn in a dog food bad for all breeds? or specific to Yorkies? |

I'm pet sitting my Grand dog this week. She is a Cockapoo and my daughter says she has skin allergies. She feeds her Eukanuba, and I just checked the bag. Corn is the third or fourth ingredient. Have you ever heard of Blue Buffalo? It is what I am feeding my Yorkie boy. We looked for it in W.V. last week when I picked up My Grand dog, and they didn't have it. It is supposed to be very good. |
corn is used as a 'filler' and is like throwing your money away. so you buy a big bag of dog food (18lbs for $20) and most of it isn't even meat!! |
