Umbilical Hernia's?? Do they just pop up? Tucker is 8.5 weeks old and we already knew that he had a inguinal hernia, today while I was giving him his first bath I was washing his tummy area and I felt a small hard lump right above his privates. Its smaller than a marble but bigger than a pea. Its as hard as rock. :( It doesnt seem to bother him however its bothering me. It wasnt noted on is vet paperwork, it wasnt told to me by the breeder and I swear it wasnt there yesterday. He is still eating, pottying and playing all the same and Ive been checking his inguinal hernia and it hasnt changed. My husband is taking him over to a friend of mine that is a vet tech just to make sure that it isnt super serious and I will be making him an appointment first thing in the morning with my Vet. Ugh.. as if him having the ingunial hernia wasnt enough. My poor pup. :( |
Wow, my 12-year-old has an umbilical hernia that the vet isn't terribly concerned about, but I'm surprised to see a youngster with them. I hope your friend has some advice for you. Please keep us informed. |
Gus was diagnosed with an umbilical hernia when he was neutered at about 9 months of age. He's now 13 months of age. I'm pretty sure he had it when I purchased him. He was probably born with it, or it occurred just after birth. The vet said there was no need for surgery, to correct it, but we needed to watch for changes that might indicate the need for surgery. |
thanks for your replies. My vet tech friend checked it out, she also works where I take my animals. Anyways she says that it is a umbilical hernia, that it is so small that it isnt much of a concern. We do need to keep and eye on it and if it gets bigger or if it starts to bother him, he will need to have it taken care of sooner than when we have him neutered. |
Umbilical hernias aren't a genetic defect...they are the result of the dam chewing the cord too short at birth. |
my bentley had a small hernia when he was a puppy as well....my breeder was VERY upfront and honest about it and actually took some money off his adoption price in the event i would have to get it surgically removed during his neuter...she said it may very well go away on its own but just in case, made provisions so i could get it taken care of... he is a little over a year old and has totally disappeared on its own :) |
